NURSING CARE IN 2018, THE NURSING CENTER OF THE LEBANON VALLEY BRETHREN HOME (D/B/A LONDONDERRY VILLAGE) PLACED 8 BEDS FROM THE LEFFLER CARE UNIT IN A "TEMPORARY OFFLINE" STATUS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH; THIS WAS DONE TO BOTH CORRELATE WITH DECLINING CENSUS TRENDS, AS WELL AS TO CREATE SOME EMPTY ROOMS THAT WERE NEEDED FOR STAFF OFFICES. THE FACILITY THEREBY OPERATED 92 ACTIVE BEDS, DIVIDED AMONG THREE (3) PROGRAMMATIC COMPONENTS: 40 NURSING BEDS LOCATED IN THE FOUR, 10-BED GREEN HOUSES HOMES; 20 BEDS IN THE TRANQUIL TERRACE GENERAL NURSING UNIT; AND THE REMAINING 32 BEDS IN THE TRADITIONAL LEFFLER CARE NURSING UNIT. OVERALL OCCUPANCY FOR NURSING WAS IN THE MID-80TH PERCENTILE. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH STATE AND NATIONAL TRENDS WHEREIN NURSING HOME OCCUPANCY RATES ARE FALLING DUE TO CHANGES IN UTILIZATION PATTERNS. OUR FOUR GREEN HOUSE HOMES, IN THEIR ELEVENTH YEAR OF SERVICE, REMAIN AS ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND HIGHEST QUALITY NURSING SETTINGS IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA. THE FACILITY RECORDED ITS BEST DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH INSPECTION IN RECENT YEARS, BEING CITED FOR ONLY ONE MINOR DEFICIENCY. THE PERCENTAGE OF RESIDENTS IN NURSING WHO REQUIRED FINANCIAL SUBSIDY FROM BOTH LVBH AND THE MEDICAID PROGRAM WAS IN THE RANGE OF 35-40%. DURING 2018, THE HEALTH CENTER MAINTAINED ITS 5-STAR QUALITY RATING BY THE CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES. AS THE YEAR APPROACHED ITS END, THE ORGANIZATION BROKE GROUND ON CONSTRUCTION OF TWO NEW GREEN HOUSE BUILDINGS, AT A PROJECTED COST OF OVER $6 MILLION; THE NEW BUILDINGS ARE SLATED TO OPEN IN LATE 2019. PERSONAL CARE - IN THE PERSONAL CARE UNIT, THE 2018 ANNUAL INSPECTION BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES ALSO WENT VERY WELL, AND RESULTED IN ONLY A FEW MINOR DEFICIENCIES WHICH WERE IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED. NO SIGNIFICANT ISSUES OR PROBLEMS WERE RAISED BY RESIDENTS AT THE QUARTERLY RESIDENT COUNCIL MEETINGS. OCCUPANCY OF THE PERSONAL CARE UNIT MAINTAINED ITS POSITIVE UPWARD TRENDING FROM 2017, AND IT AVERAGED 35 RESIDENTS FOR MOST OF THE YEAR. INDEPENDENT LIVING THE INDEPENDENT LIVING COMMUNITY REMAINED FUNCTIONALLY "FULL" THROUGHOUT 2018, AND WE CONTINUED TO BUILD OUR WAIT LISTS (NOW NUMBERING AROUND 300 FUTURE PROSPECTS). VOLUNTEERISM AMONG LVBH RESIDENTS STAYED AT HISTORICALLY HIGH LEVELS, AND THE RESIDENT-ORGANIZED 2018 ANNUAL YARD SALE SET NEW RECORDS FOR BOTH VOLUNTEER HOURS AND NET PROFITS RETURNED TO THE COMMUNITY'S BENEVOLENT CARE FUND. AT THE BOARD LEVEL, A MASTER SITE PLANNING EXERCISE WITH SFCS ARCHITECTS WAS COMPLETED, AND PLANS FOR A MAJOR EXPANSION OF INDEPENDENT LIVING ON OUR SOUTH CAMPUS WERE INITIATED.Lebanon Valley Brethren Home has been around for a long time.
