Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
Obtain and maintain a Class B CDL permit within six (6) months of hire date & obtain and maintain a Class B CDL within one (1) year of hire date.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma, or G.E.D. Certificate and six (6) months of vocational training AND two (2) years of experience in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of varied automotive equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Chief Mechanic or designee, this is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for the journey-level repair of a wide variety of light and medium motorized vehicles and attendant equipment. Work involves the overhaul and troubleshooting of standard and specialized engines, air conditioning and electrical systems, suspensions, and portable electrical generation equipment. Employees exercise a significant degree of independent judgment in determining method of repair following receipt of oral or written work orders. Work is inspected while in progress and/or records of equipment services are reviewed to determine degree of employee performance. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled workers.
Responsibilities and Reporting During An Emergency Situation: If assigned, employees in this classification will be required to report and carry out duties as directed for the duration of an emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Performs repairs, tune-ups, diagnostics tests, and major overhauls on a wide variety of light and medium equipment, including diesel, Hybrids and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
* Responds to road service calls; services and repairs disabled vehicles for all mechanical malfunctions.
* Inputs and retrieves work orders from a computerized Fleet Maintenance Program.
* Directs preventative maintenance and simple repair activities of semi-skilled automotive workers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Semi-skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of diesel and/or gasoline powered on and off highway equipment. May assist staff or independently perform troubleshooting, disassembly, repair and reassembly of components of all sizes and types involving the mechanical operation of the vehicles/equipment described above. Performs preventive maintenance including oil and filter changes and lubrication. May change tires. Performs repairs both at shop and on field located job sites. Uses both hand and air driven power tools and other related shop equipment. Completes and maintains repair orders, part requisitions, time sheets, and other records as required. Operates both arc and oxygen/acetylene welding equipment. Is required to maintain a clean working area. Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive and heavy equipment trade. Knowledge of safe work practices associated with the prevention of injuries caused from inattention to the occupational hazards of the trade.
The ability to learn electrical systems (including interpreting schematic diagrams), hydraulics (automotive and heavy), internal combustion engines, and drive train (rotary and tracked) which are common to the automotive and heavy equipment trades. Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing equipment and instruments of the automotive mechanic trade. Ability to read and understand repair manuals, diagrams, drawings, parts lists/diagrams and computer reports. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform mathematical tasks. Ability to research, investigate, experiment, detect, inspect, verify, recognize, and recommend solutions. Ability to think rationally, react calmly and responsively in stressful or emergency situations. Ability to perform physically difficult tasks. The ability to work on equipment overhead causing much of the manual work performed with raised arms and hands above the head for extended periods of time.
The ability to operate hand tools and torque wrenches requiring in excess of 100 pounds. of lateral pressure applied to the tool. The ability to work in confined spaces such as pit areas, engine compartments and underneath vehicles requiring significant bending and/or stooping to access critical areas of the equipment being repaired. Ability to perform duties on a variety of floor surfaces, both flat and variable.
The ability to work with and around various chemicals such as diesel fuel, gasoline, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, cleaning solvents, anti-freeze and other substances common to the automotive repair trade. Ability to see. Ability to ambulate independently, drive and operate unassisted, automotive and heavy equipment as described above. Ability to bend, stoop, sit, crouch, crawl, climb and stand. Ability to lift and hold parts and components in excess of 65 pounds. Ability and agility to perform various tasks in all weather conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an equivalency diploma and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience repairing equipment of the types noted above.
A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment and be able to secure a Florida Class CDL within six (6) months of employment as required by state statute and Florida Senate Bill 658. Must provide customary hand tools, common to the automotive and mechanical trade.

The Fleet Management Division is actively seeking a Heavy Truck Technician III.

The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used to repair heavy vehicleswhich involves the use of specialized skills or specialized equipment, which is acquired through a combination of training and considerable on the job experience. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and includes contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarifications. Work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by somewhat diversified procedures and precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow; however, the work also involves differing situations requiring comparison of problem elements to reference points and exercising judgment to match the decision. The work is performed in a controlled environment where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable.
