JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Chief Mechanic or designee, this is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for the journey-level repair of a wide variety of light and medium motorized vehicles and attendant equipment. Work involves the overhaul and troubleshooting of standard and specialized engines, air conditioning and electrical systems, suspensions, and portable electrical generation equipment. Employees exercise a significant degree of independent judgment in determining method of repair following receipt of oral or written work orders. Work is inspected while in progress and/or records of equipment services are reviewed to determine degree of employee performance. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled workers. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Performs repairs, tune-ups, diagnostics tests, and major overhauls on a wide variety of light and medium equipment, including diesel, Hybrids and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). * Responds to road service calls; services and repairs disabled vehicles for all mechanical malfunctions. * Inputs and retrieves work orders from a computerized Fleet Maintenance Program. * Directs preventative maintenance and simple repair activities of semi-skilled automotive workers. * Inspects, adjusts, and replaces valves, pistons, bearings, brakes, cooling, fuel, ignition, electrical and exhaust systems; diagnoses systems using electronic scanner equipment. * Overhauls and services hydraulic and vacuum controls and components. * Operates service vehicles and tow trucks; performs on-road service on disabled vehicles. * Diagnoses and repairs specialized Police vehicle emergency equipment. * Diagnoses and repairs suspension problems; sets steering to factory specifications. * Road-tests equipment following repair. * Must be able and willing to perform all duties of subordinate positions. * Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation. * Must maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, and managers. * Performs related work as required for this position description only. This is a skilled, technical/mechanical position responsible for performing the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment. 1. Performs preventive maintenance required by vehicle and equipment manufacturer including law enforcement vehicles, aerial devices, fire apparatus, medium-heavy duty trucks, generator units, and off-road equipment. Will routinely lift and position tools and supporting equipment up to 75 lbs. for safety reasons. Will have to work from a ladder and be capable of lifting component assembly weighing up to 75 lbs. from the vehicle to a workbench. Will also be required to operate aerial devices from their stowed to fully extended heights from both ground and platform controls. This duty is performed daily. 2. Diagnoses equipment failures, orders parts and makes necessary repairs on a variety of equipment. This duty is performed daily. 3. Examples of Work * Performs tasks of Heavy Truck Technician II * Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs heavy vehicles for mechanical defects. * Performs preventive maintenance such as changing oil and hoses on heavy vehicles. * Performs general engine repair and overhaul such as adjusting clutches, replacing main and connecting rod bearings, etc. * Troubleshoots and repairs electrical systems. * Performs general mechanical repairs to systems such as fuel systems, exhaust systems, cooling systems, air conditioning, transmission, and steering and suspension components. * Perform general repair to rooftop AC systems. * Perform general repairs to RV's and Busses. * Performs mechanical repairs to diesel or propane powered equipment. * Road tests vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more to determine whether repairs have been completed. * Prepares and maintains records on jobs. * Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used to repair heavy vehicles. * Knowledge of standard tools and equipment of the heavy vehicle repair trade. * Knowledge of heavy vehicle engine electrical systems. * Knowledge of hydraulic and air-operated systems. * Knowledge of test equipment including volt-ohm meter, dwell meter, tachometer, micrometer, engine analyzer, and transmission pressure gauge. * Knowledge of the hazards of the work and safety practices and procedures. * Ability to inspect and determine mechanical repairs needed on heavy vehicles with gas and diesel engines. * Ability to perform preventive maintenance on heavy vehicles. * Ability to troubleshoot and perform engine and transmission repairs using a scan tool. * Ability to read, understand, and apply repair orders and technical manuals. * Ability to operate tools and equipment. Ability to operate dump trucks, garbage packers, road tractors, bucket trucks, buses, trailers, heavy vans, pumpers, ladder trucks, quick response units, auxiliary engines, and other vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more. * Ability to prepare and maintain records. Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel driven motors and related auto equipment, machinery, and tools. Employee performs complex work with independence and more difficult work under guidance and supervisor of the Mechanic Lead.
