Providers in these clinics include physicians and advanced practitioners, all of whom have been a part of Legacy for several years. The current full-time commitment includes 156 clinical shifts. Surgeons are expected to comply with all Oregon State Trauma program requirements and expected to actively participate in quality improvement projects and community outreach education. POSITION OVERVIEW: Surgeon is responsible for providing medical, surgical treatment, and follow up for patients treated with severe and life-threatening traumatic injuries, critical illness or emergency general surgery conditions. Surgeon will work with providers in other specialties, as needed, to stabilize and treat patients. Surgeon assesses and manages patients following established standards and practices. Work schedule: Varied shift work in the hospital and in clinics that equates to 156 shifts per year for full time. Shifts are comprised of day shifts and night shifts in the hospital or a day shift in the clinic. Currently, a hospital day shift is 7am-7pm and a hospital night shift is 6pm-7am providing an hour of overlap. Clinic shift hours vary with patient volume demands but do not exceed 8 am to 8 pm. Back-up shifts, either day or night in the hospital follow the same hours but are only reimbursed and counted toward the annual shift requirement if the surgeon is called in and works more than 6 hours. A surge shift occurs when the surgeon is called in and works less than six hours, which does not count toward the annual shift requirement. Call expectation: Primary night call and back up call is evenly distributed and typically includes 2-4 primary night shifts per month. Work location: St. Charles Bend, Trauma & Acute Care Surgery Clinic ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned) Clinical Duties: Examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats critically injured patients and patients with emergency general surgery conditions. May perform emergency procedures including endotracheal tube intubation, tube thoracostomy, resuscitative thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation, peritoneal lavage, and massive transfusion. Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings. Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan. Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines. Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments. Educates patients regarding health, illness and injury prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely. Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed. Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration. Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth. Maintains CME requirements and certifications per trauma center and State requirements. Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; identifies areas and functions where patients, staff, and physicians need information. Medical performance issues will be directed to the medical director of the service. May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned. Keeps all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties. Increases understanding and collaboration throughout the medical community. Maintains compliance with hospital's Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, as required by SCHS Board of Directors. Administrative Expectations: Participates in SCMG provider meetings and assists in policy formation for SCMG and provider practice. Participates in administrative activities of the trauma service as required by Oregon statutes. EDUCATION Required: Graduation from an accredited medical school. Successful completion of an accredited residency program in General Surgery. Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated. This includes board eligibility/certification in the specialty being practiced. Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required. Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies. Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification. Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules. Preferred: Fellowship training and board certification in Surgical Critical Care. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION Required: Current license as MD / DO. Board certified or eligible in General Surgery. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training. Unrestricted Federal DEA number. Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs. Valid driver's license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. Current BLS certification. Current ACLS and ATLS certification. If provider will practice sedation, moderate or deep, ACLS certification is also required. Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS Inpatient locations. Preferred: Current unrestricted Oregon Medical License. EXPERIENCE Required: Experience using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) software. Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System. Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results. The Supplemental OB Hospitalist positions are designed to support the established groups of OB Hospitalists located at Legacy Mt. Hood Medical Center. There are additional opportunities for coverage throughout the Legacy system surrounding areas (Legacy Silverton Medical Center, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center). At the primary site(s), the OB Hospitalists support the inpatient needs of the Legacy Medical Group (LMG) Maternal Fetal Medicine service and function as perinatal extenders. The OB Hospitalists and the MFM providers work closely together on a daily basis, and the MFM practice has 24/7 (not in-house) coverage available. The OB Hospitalist also provides backup to the LMG Midwifery Practice (all CNMs), coverage for unassigned labor/triage patients, support of our private practice OB/GYN colleagues as needed and provide variable coverage for Emergency Department gynecologic consults and emergencies (miscarriage, ovarian torsion, ectopic pregnancy, etc). Both locations have Level IV NICUs and serve a vital role in the surrounding communities for high-risk pregnancies. Dedicated in-house Anesthesia is present 24/7 at both sites. No clinic responsibilities. Requirements and Qualifications: * Graduate of four-year U.S. Medical School or equivalent with residency completed in OB/GYN * Board Certified or Board Eligible in OB-GYN. * Unrestricted license to practice medicine in Oregon and Washington. * Current BLS from the American Heart Association required. * Bilingual a plus! Required procedures/skills: * Full OB scope of both low and high-risk pregnancies including NSVD, operative vaginal delivery, cesarean section, management of third stage labor, hemorrhage, level 1 ultrasound, repair of episiotomy and lacerations, VBAC, etc. Gynecology procedures including D&C, minor and major laparoscopy with adnexal surgery (oophorectomy, cystectomy, salpingectomy, ectopic), tubal ligation (laparoscopic and postpartum). * In-house 12- or 24-hour shifts (designated, well-appointed call room) Follows guidelines set forth in Legacy's Values in Action.
