Job Summary
The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY) is seeking a Compliance Counsel to oversee organizational compliance with grant requirements and legal regulations applicable to legal aid programs. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, IOLA requirements, OTDA rules, HOPP guidelines, and other applicable federal, state, and local laws. The Compliance Counsel works closely with leadership and staff to translate complex regulatory requirements into clear policies, practical guidance, and effective training.
ResponsibilitiesCompliance Oversight
Monitor and interpret LSC, IOLA, OTDA, HOPP, and other funding and regulatory requirements
Review grant agreements and funding conditions to ensure organizational compliance
Advise leadership and staff on compliance obligations and risk areas
Policies & Procedures
Review and update organizational policies and practices to ensure compliance
Identify compliance issues related to new or existing programs and recommend solutions
Implement policy and procedure changes in response to regulatory updates
Training & Guidance
Develop and deliver compliance training for attorneys, paralegals, and support staff
Create clear training materials, guides, and reference tools
Collaborate with HR for onboarding/training new employees
Provide ongoing guidance and consultation to staff on compliance questions
Monitoring & Audits
Conduct internal compliance reviews, including case files, timekeeping, and service restrictions
Develop systems to identify, correct, and prevent compliance issues
Prepare for and respond to audits, monitoring visits, and compliance inquiries
Other Duties
Carry a reduced caseload of advice and brief service cases through the HelpLine.

Required Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Admission to practice law in New York State and a minimum of three (3) years of post-admission legal practice.
Experience with legal aid, nonprofit organizations, or grant-funded programs strongly preferred.
Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn LSC regulations and other legal aid funding requirements.
Strong organizational, analytical, and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
Compensation and Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary, starting at $ 95,286.00 for licensed attorneys with three years of experience and up to $122,383.00 for licensed attorneys with more than fifteen years of experience. Job Summary
The Paralegal will work closely with attorneys, primarily on landlord-tenant cases, to provide legal support and advocacy for individuals and families facing homelessness. Key responsibilities include preparing and reviewing legal documents, conducting client interviews, performing case research and investigations, and offering administrative assistance. The Paralegal will also be responsible for filing and retrieving pleadings from local courts, as well as traveling to support intake and outreach events. Essential Job Functions
Coordinate and maintain schedules for hearings, court appearances, and related deadlines.
Conduct applicant screenings in the office and at offsite clinics and courts, gather documentation, and determine eligibility for legal services.
Interview clients and witnesses, collect relevant facts, and assist in investigating claims.
Assist attorneys with case preparation, including legal research, drafting legal documents and memoranda (within ethical and legal guidelines), and filing documents with local courts.
Participate in outreach initiatives, including educational sessions with tenant groups, prospective clients, courts, and community organizations.
Collect and input case data into the case management system; maintain accurate paper and electronic files.
Record billable time promptly and accurately in the case management system.
Work effectively and professionally with colleagues, judges, opposing counsel, court personnel, and community partners.

Required Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

They will gain hands-on experience and assist CLC staff in advocating for our child clients. The intern will be paired with a mentor and receive close supervision and training. Intern duties may include: observation of and participation in court proceedings, witness interviews (children, parents, etc.), and conferences; digesting case records (school, medical, forensic reports, transcripts); legal research, and legal writing.
Hybrid Schedule
This summer program will follow a full-time (9am - 5pm) hybrid model, from June 8th - August 7th.

AmeriCorps members provide intake and screening services for income-eligible persons seeking legal assistance with civil law problems and outreach to underserved populations. They are offered the opportunity for direct, substantive legal experience, excellent training and a chance to make a critical difference for low-income and vulnerable populations and their communities.
Member Benefits:
Members receive a living allowance of $2,000 Monthly for the duration of the contract term. They may also be eligible for aid in obtaining basic health coverage, housing and food assistance, an educational award, childcare expenses, and deferment of student loans.

Job description
Under the leadership of the Borough Director, the staff attorney will work to effectuate the mission of CLC. The staff attorney will ensure that CLC maintains high standards of representation and client services. Essential Duties/Responsibilities

The Access to Justice Project is a partnership between LawNY and AmeriCorps, America's most preeminent volunteer service program, which seeks to address the legal needs of clients with low income by expanding the level of legal assistance available and helping them to access the legal system in order to achieve economic benefits, decent housing, health care and other critical basic needs. In addition, members work to recruit and support community volunteers and enhance efforts at collaboration with local human services agencies.
AmeriCorps members provide intake and screening services for income-eligible persons seeking legal assistance with civil law problems and outreach to underserved populations. They are offered the opportunity for direct, substantive legal experience, excellent training and a chance to make a critical difference for low-income and vulnerable populations and their communities.
Member Benefits:
Members receive a living allowance of $2,000 Monthly for the duration of the contract term. They may also be eligible for aid in obtaining basic health coverage, housing and food assistance, an educational award, childcare expenses, and deferment of student loans.
The successful candidate will serve a contract term of 6 months (900 hours) with the possibility of renewal depending upon continued funding.
