The Iowa Insurance Division is now recruiting for a highly motivated Legal Assistant for our Insurance Enforcement Bureau interested in assisting attorneys in protecting consumers by enforcing the unfair trade practices law, the securities law and other laws intended to protect the integrity of the insurance and investment markets.
Responsibilities include:
* Prepare tentative drafts, letters, memoranda and legal documents for use in the preparation of opinions, reports, briefs, contracts, and other papers or legal documents.
* Prepare drafts of pleadings, motions and discovery documents in connection with cases.
* Attends hearings.
* Assist in the preparation of drafts of findings of fact, conclusions of law and orders based on the evidentiary record.
* Act as filing clerk in contested cases proceedings before a Division hearing officer.
* Conduct legal research in various areas as assigned.
* Request documents from other regulatory agencies and courts.
* Support attorneys in filing legal actions to enforce the Insurance Trade Practices Act, Iowa Code Chapter 507B, the Insurance Producers Law, Iowa Code Chapter 522B, the Iowa Securities Act, Iowa Code Chapter 502, and other laws under the jurisdiction of the Iowa Insurance Commissioner intended to protect the public.
* Perform administrative controls on internal and external requests for enforcement; and develop organizational program policies, processes and procedures for child support, state tax debt, or student loan default violation cases referred by the Iowa Department of Revenue (IDR), the Child Support Recovery Unit in the Department of Human Services (CSRU) or the College Student Aid Commission (CSAC).

Works under the direction of a Supervisory Legal Assistant to review files and documents for a variety of criminal or civil cases to become familiar with the issues and identify pertinent material. + Establishes and maintains an effective system of compiling, indexing, and organizing this information and its sources.
+ Participates and assists in preparation for trial by compiling, organizing, and indexing various trial documents. Marks and identifies trial documents and drafts a list of documents offered at trial.
+ Range of legal tasks include, but are not limited to copying, mailing, closing files, maintaining pleadings and maintaining a calendar system for assigned attorneys which accurately keeps track of due dates for pleading, hearings, and court appearances and other document and meeting deadlines.
+ Maintain electronic case files which are organized, current, accessible, and retrievable and mains integrity of data inputted into the case management system.
+ Search and extract legal references in libraries and computer-data banks.
+ Review and summarize information in prescribed format on case precedent and decisions.

+ Assists AUSAs by preparing, scheduling, reviewing and organizing discovery, notifying, and managing witnesses.
+ Aids in organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial.
Required Qualifications:
+ Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
+ Requires paralegal certificate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study. One year of legal training or legal experience or at least two years of college education may be substituted for the paralegal certificate.
+ Additionally, at least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required; trial experience very helpful
+ Automated litigation support experience valued.
+ Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
+ Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
+ Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
+ Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). This role offers the opportunity to work closely with a team of experienced attorneys on a broad range of litigation matters, supporting cases from initial discovery through trial.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and experienced in managing complex case files, preparing litigation documents, and coordinating trial preparation. This position provides a collaborative and fast-paced work environment with regular in-office hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM & Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities:
