The Access to Justice Project is a partnership between LawNY and AmeriCorps, America's most preeminent volunteer service program, which seeks to address the legal needs of clients with low income by expanding the level of legalassistance available and helping them to access the legal system in order to achieve economic benefits, decent housing, health care and other critical basic needs. In addition, members work to recruit and support community volunteers and enhance efforts at collaboration with local human services agencies.
AmeriCorps members provide intake and screening services for income-eligible persons seeking legalassistance with civil law problems and outreach to underserved populations. They are offered the opportunity for direct, substantive legal experience, excellent training and a chance to make a critical difference for low-income and vulnerable populations and their communities.
Member Benefits:
Members receive a living allowance of $2,000 Monthly for the duration of the contract term. They may also be eligible for aid in obtaining basic health coverage, housing and food assistance, an educational award, childcare expenses, and deferment of student loans.
The successful candidate will serve a contract term of 6 months (900 hours) with the possibility of renewal depending upon continued funding.
This position is based out of our Geneva office. For a 6 month contract, the term of service must begin anytime between 11.1.2025 and 5.1.2026.
Member Qualifications:
Members should have at least two years of college or equivalent experience. Prior experience working with clients with low income is preferred but not required. Must live within commutable distance to the specified office.

Position Summary

Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary point of contact between attorneys, borrowers, loan servicers, and other stakeholders to ensure clear and effective communication throughout the settlement process.
Coordinate settlement discussions related to court-ordered and non-court-ordered loss mitigation programs, working with all parties to identify viable resolutions such as loan modifications, forbearance, short sales, and deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure.
Monitor and manage critical deadlines across the loss mitigation and foreclosure process, including application submission periods, appeal windows, and court-imposed deadlines.
Track, document, and update all case actions to ensure timely responses, submissions, and completion of required tasks.
Utilize CaseAware and other client systems (including LoanSphere, Tempo, and Equator) for case tracking, document management, and communication with clients and stakeholders.
Ensure accuracy and consistency of data across all client and internal systems, tracking case progress and maintaining alignment with internal procedures and client expectations.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a legal or mortgage servicing environment, preferably in loss mitigation or foreclosure-related roles.
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel for managing correspondence, workload, and document drafting.
Strong working knowledge of CaseAware or other case management platforms such as LoanSphere, Tempo, or Equator is preferred.
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively negotiate and coordinate with borrowers, attorneys, and other stakeholders.
Familiarity with federal and state regulations governing loss mitigation, including CFPB guidelines, HUD rules, and mortgage servicing compliance standards.

Position Summary
The Tenant Advocacy Paralegal is part of and supports a team of attorneys in the Tenant Advocacy practice group through various tasks, including litigation support, factual investigation, file management, case data entry, intake and screening of potential clients, legislative and policy advocacy support, and other assignments as needed. The Tenant Advocacy Paralegal is supervised by the Managing Attorney or another position in the practice group.
Salary
The referenced pay range represents the estimated minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range and will be determined by considering factors, including but not limited to, education, experience, qualifications, individual expertise, market data, and internal equity considerations.
The salary range for this position is $40,976 to $55,536.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Travel to and work in the Rochester Telesca Center office is required to meet client and organizational needs.

· Engage in administrative duties, including but not limited to taking and returning phone calls, answering correspondence, filing, copying, and scanning.
· Conduct intake interviews for potential clients and accurately enter their information into the Empire Justice Center case management system.
· Develop and maintain the organizational systems for case files and other documents.
· Engage in investigations, including gathering documents from clients, requesting records, interviewing clients and potential witnesses, and gathering and compiling data.
· Coordinate client service and contacts, including scheduling appointments with attorneys.
· Case management: entering and tracking client information into various databases, opening and closing files, organizing client and case information for practice group review, coordinating follow-up services for clients, including using translation services and referrals.
· Keep accurate case and time records in the case management system.
· Provide legal information to clients and others under the supervision of an attorney.
· Maintain confidentiality of client information and files.
· Prepare legal documents.
· Help to identify systemic issues that create barriers to the receipt of housing assistance for low-income communities and individuals.
· Collaborate with advocates and attorneys from partnering organizations to find other resources to preserve clients' housing.
· Work closely with teams within the Rochester office to identify and assist with related legal needs that housing clients may have, including immigration issues, language access, services for crime victims, and access to public benefits.
· Calendar and track court or settlement deadlines.
· Prepare outreach materials, conduct outreach on the availability of services, and distribute community education materials.
· Assist in the collection and reporting of case closing information as required by grant and contract providers, and provide them with timely reports.
· Assist attorneys in the preparation of memoranda or other documents for state legislative offices in support of lobbying efforts.
· Provide litigation support to practice group attorneys.
· Attend training, presentations, and events as needed, both online and in person.
· Regularly participate in calls and meetings with other practice group staff.
· Run selected database reports.
· Maintain and update the referral database and provide outside referrals.
· Must demonstrate high comfort and commitment to working with people and clients who are disadvantaged and/or disabled.
· Please note that all positions will supervise other practice group members if needed.
· Due to limited resources, all staff are expected to perform administrative and other support-related duties to serve our clients and fulfill our mission as a non-profit legal services organization.
