The Mississippi LLI attorney also will contribute to the Reporters Committee's amicus and pre-publication/vetting practices for matters within Mississippi; facilitate and conduct trainings for journalists and news organizations in their state; and work with stakeholders across Mississippi to, among other things, increase the visibility of the LLI. This full-time position reports to the Director of the Local Legal Initiative.
The Mississippi LLI Attorney must be based in Mississippi; Jackson, Hattiesburg, or Oxford is preferred. Some travel throughout Mississippi and to the Reporters Committee's office in Washington, D.C. is required.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Representing Mississippi journalists and news organizations in litigation and other matters involving access to judicial records/proceedings, freedom of information, and other newsgathering and First Amendment matters; this includes, among other things: intake/case selection and other strategy decisions; drafting correspondence, administrative appeals, pleadings, briefs, and other filings in trial and appellate courts; and appearing on behalf of the clients in state and federal court;

Working collaboratively with stakeholders in Mississippi and internally at RCFP to promote the LLI and its strategic goals;

Qualifications

Attorney must be licensed to practice law in the State of Mississippi. In addition, the attorney must have at least 5 years of experience as a criminal defense trial attorney and/or have acted as lead counsel in at least ten (10) felony trials in the Circuit Court system and acted as lead or assisting counsel in at least one (1) capital felony trial in Circuit Court.

This is a highly visible position requiring regular face-to-face, telephone, and written contact with a wide variety of stakeholders both within and outside of the organization. The Senior Legal Analyst represents Intermountain and the Legal Department in a professional manner, functioning with a high level of confidentiality, knowledge, courtesy, efficiency, and thoroughness. This position works under the direction of an attorney but uses their own judgment in composing correspondence, reports, discovery materials and/or contracts. This position has routine access to confidential data pertaining to patients, employees, financial, and/or other legal matters and must maintain privacy and confidentiality requirements.

**Essential Functions**
LITIGATION:
+ Coordinates with Attorneys, Courts, Professional Licensing Boards, Witnesses, and Intermountain Stakeholders on litigation issues, including locating witnesses and documents, responding to subpoenas, scheduling hearings and depositions, preparing discovery, filing documents and supporting witnesses through litigation. Works with highly sensitive legal issues and confidential personal health information. Evaluates subpoenas for legitimacy, handles questions on subpoenas and patient authorizations from all company entities and obtains missing information to correct invalid subpoenas. Obtains and indexes medical records, locates missing records, prepares litigation correspondence, reports and summaries, drafts court documents for attorney review, prepares affidavits, organizes litigation documents, coordinates documents productions, assembles initial answers to Interrogatories and Requests for Production of Documents, assists in assembling litigation documents and prepares exhibits for hearings. Manages litigation through the use of an electronic tool and database to ensure the proper handling of documents and communication.

Value to the Team: The Legal Assistant contributes value to the operations team by working to complete all duties thoroughly, accurately, and timely. This role also ensures compliance with laws, regulations, client requirements, court rules and best practices; collectively working to provide quality legal services to our clients.
Duties and Responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:
Prepare documents for various default servicing proceedings
Assist with complex files at various stages of default proceedings.
Update internal Firm systems and external client systems within the expected timeframes.
Sort, scan, categorize, label, digitally file and properly organize legal documentation.
Complete assigned work queue items in the designated timeframes.
Grasp and retain basic legal concepts and terminology that impact ability to produce accurate work product.
Assist with preparing various required items for clients and courts.
Review incoming documents and disperse to appropriate parties.
Communicate professionally through various platforms: phone, email, internal/external messaging systems timely.
Timely complete all assigned trainings in the Firm LMS.
Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have a strong understanding of Legal proceedings and general law firm acumen.
Skilled at accurate data entry.
Strong ability to adhere to basic instructions, job aids and procedures.
Ability to adhere to Firm policy and apply policy requirements while processing assigned work.
Strong time-management skills.
Self-driven with ability to work independently or collaboratively, as needed.
Commitment to providing exceptional, responsive, and time-bound service.
Highly proficient with Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, etc.) and computer savvy.
Training and Experience Requirements:
A strong candidate for this role would have the following:
3-5+ years experience working in default servicing/creditors' rights or related legal industry
Strong working knowledge of Louisiana court systems, and various requirements
High school Diploma or equivlant
Paralegal Certificate a plus
Experience working in a fast-paced environment
Experience working in a technology driven environment
Excellent communication skills required (both verbal and written)
Conditions of Work:
Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
Ability to remain focused for extended periods.
Ability to work on computers for a significant portion of the day.
Ability to perform repetitive movements as required for positions (Typing, clicking, swiveling).
Ability to multi-task.
