Organization:
The Staff Attorneys' Office provides assistance to the Court through legal research and the preparation of memoranda. Responsibilities:
The staff attorneys perform research for the Court of Appeals judges and draft memoranda, opinions, and orders in a wide range of civil and criminal matters.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school; admission to practice before the highest court of a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or federal court of general jurisdiction of the United States; excellent academic credentials; superior analytic, research, oral communication, writing, and editing skills; and at least two years post-law school legal experience (preferably as a judicial law clerk and/or with significant federal law experience).

Qualifications:

AGENCY OVERVIEW
CPCS is the state agency in Massachusetts responsible for providing an attorney when the state or federal constitution or a state statute requires the appointment of an attorney for a person who cannot afford to retain one. The agency provides representation in criminal, delinquency, youthful offender, family regulation, guardianship, mental health, sexually dangerous person, and sex offender registry cases, as well as in appeals and post-conviction and post-judgment proceedings related to those matters.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Training Department of the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) is accepting applications for a Legal Training Attorney position in the Criminal Defense Practice Area. Criminal Defense Legal Training Attorneys in the Training Department work collaboratively to educate, train, enable, empower, and support criminal defense attorneys so they may provide excellent representation and client-centered advocacy to the Agency's clients. The Criminal Defense Legal Training Attorneys serve Public Defender Division staff and private lawyers accepting appointments through the Private Counsel Division of CPCS.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties of the Criminal Defense Legal Training Attorney include, but are not limited to:
* Developing, planning, organizing, and coaching all CPCS core curriculum and specialized training events. This includes the development and maintenance of CPCS criminal defense online training such as creating and editing video lectures, adapting group exercises to an online format, and developing other online resources initiatives;
* Working collaboratively with Bar Advocate Programs and staff offices to deliver training and support for other training initiatives;
* Designing, revising, and delivering training workshops for staff and Bar Advocates;
* Supporting training initiatives and events for investigators and social service advocates, and assisting with training projects for support staff, supervisors, and management/leadership training events;

* Writing and editing training materials;
* Writing and editing summaries of recent and significant criminal defense decisions (MA and Federal) and practice advisories for distribution to criminal defense practitioners;
* Monitoring and responding to inquiries in connection with Group IO listservs (PDD, Private Bar and Murder List);
* Assisting with the development and updating of all criminal defense materials on MyGideon;
* Collaborating cross-divisionally to provide exceptional and current trainings that support the zealous representation of clients across CPCS;
* May maintain a small criminal caseload; and,
* Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
* Must be eligible to practice law in this jurisdiction as a member of the Massachusetts bar in good standing, or as an attorney in another jurisdiction who is eligible to engage in limited Massachusetts practice under Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:04;
* Have a minimum of 3 years full-time experience representing indigent defendants in criminal matters (4 years preferred);
* Access to an automobile in order to travel to offices, courts, and training locations that are not easily accessible by public transportation; and,
* Access to home internet access, sufficient to work remotely, and proficiency using zoom and/or other online platforms.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
A successful candidate will have experience in some or all of the following areas:
* Jury trials and significant motions filed and litigated;
* Experience as a presenter or coach at training events (CPCS, MCLE or other programs) or at in-house office training sessions;
* Cultural sensitivity/competence in diversity and equity training, course work, and other relevant experience;
* Participation in internal or external trainings;
* Appellate work such as post-conviction representation, interlocutory appeals, petitions for extraordinary relief, and/or petitions for stay of execution of sentence;
* Four or more years in Juvenile, District and or Superior Court, and if applicable, trial courts in other jurisdictions, as a criminal defense lawyer;
* Significant work with expert witnesses and/or forensic evidence issues;
* Work in specialty courts;
* Author of writings or publications;
* Computer skills, web design, digital media or other technology related skills; and,
* Management, supervision and mentoring.

SOUTHEAST REGION
The Southeast Region is home to an ethnically, racially, and linguistically diverse population of immigrants dating back to the 19

century whaling industry. Brockton known as the “City of Champions” because it was home to former undefeated heavyweight boxing champion, Rocky Marciano, and middleweight boxing champion Marvin Hagler. Fall River was once the leading textile manufacturer center in the country and maintains the world's largest collection of World War II naval vessels at Battleship Cove. New Bedford is home to the Whaling National Historic Park. Hyannis is known as the gateway to esteemed Cape Cod and is home to the iconic Kennedy family compound. The area offers beautiful sand beaches, numerous state parks, and quaint towns with picturesque harbors.
The Southeast Region of CPCS includes Children and Family Law Division office locations in Brockton, Hyannis, and Fall River.
NORTHEAST REGION
The Northeast Region is filled with history. Lowell is known as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution for its textile manufacturing with many of these historic manufacturing sites preserved by the National Park Service. During the Cambodian genocide, the city took in an influx of refugees, leading to Lowell having the second largest Cambodian-American population in the country. Salem is one of the most significant seaports in early American history and it is well-known for its role as the location of the Salem Witch Trials.
The Northeast Region of CPCS includes Children and Family Law Division office locations in Lowell and Salem.
WEST REGION
The West Region has a diverse topography from the Berkshire Mountains to the banks of the Connecticut River. The region is home to 22 colleges/universities which is the 2
nd
highest concentration of higher learning institutions aside from the Boston Metropolitan area. The area has long been patronized by artists and is recognized for the Eric Carle Museum, Tanglewood, and Norman Rockwell Museum. The area is famous for all of its “first innovations” including basketball, volleyball, American gas-powered automobile, motorcycle company, commercial radio station, use of integrated parts in manufacturing, railroad sleep car, and the American dictionary. The city of Worcester became a center for the American Revolution that was recognized for his industry and as a result attracted many immigrants of European descent. The city of Springfield was designated by George Washington for an Armory that became the site of Shay's Rebellion and is now a national park and site to the world's largest collection of historic American firearms. The city played a pivotal role in the Civil War as a stop for the Underground Railroad.

The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $95,000 and represents the Firm's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The Opportunity
HLA's Summer Law Clerk Program aims to contribute to the development of law students into public interest attorneys who serve people facing barriers to care and coverage. Our Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids (MHAP for Kids) is seeking two law clerks for a 10-week internship (full-time - 40 hours per week) during the Summer of 2026.
HLA is currently operating in a hybrid model with staff working both on-site and remotely. Arrangements for the Summer Law Clerks are flexible. HLA has run highly successful remote and hybrid Law Clerk programs since 2020.
About MHAP for Kids
HLA's Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids (MHAP for Kids) diverts children with unmet mental health needs from the juvenile justice system by helping them access mental health services. MHAP for Kids attorneys are embedded in Family Resource Centers (FRCs) across Massachusetts where they help at-risk youth overcome barriers to mental health services. A Boston University study of MHAP for Kids found that the program improves the health of children and their families.
Responsibilities
Availability to work full-time for a 10-week period during the summer of 2026. Internship dates are May 18, 2026 - July 24, 2026.
Assist attorneys with the representation of individual clients with duties such as conducting legal research, analyzing children's health and educational records, assisting attorneys' advocacy with schools and state agencies, and communicating with clients and key collaterals.
Conduct legal research on issues that pervade MHAP for Kids client matters to strengthen our practice program-wide.
