The Case Assistant will provide assistance in looking through approximately 1500 incoming request IDs a day, and sending to the appropriate case specialist teams to provide proper legal response. A qualified individual will have previous exposure to legal language, having an eye for detail and ability to handle sensitive, confidential information.

Senior Assistant Appellate Defenders represent adults who have been convicted of felonies and provide those individuals with direct representation in their appeals. Keeps and maintains excel spreadsheet of all payments received by the participant, DOP, or other organizations on behalf of participant.
Communicates with utility companies to verify utility service.
Coordinates all aspects of file review request from legal aid.
Reports complaints/investigations to Public Safety regarding lease and program violations of HCV and LIPH participants.

Retrieve, review and analyze documents provided by the client to ensure their accuracy in order to prepare and file the legal documents. Documents to be reviewed may include detailed client screen prints, loan documents, or account statements.
Determine missing information and documents, and request from client, if needed.
Edit and revise files as instructed by attorney and Client.
Prepare and file documents and correspondence.
Prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively with the department, attorney(s), client, or docket clerk to resolve issues as they arise.

Qualifications / Required Skills
High School Diploma or equivalent
A minimum of 6 months legal office experience; or 2 years non-legal office experience; or an Associate's Degree/ 60 undergraduate credit hours; or Paralegal Certification
Highly detail orientated, ability to interpret and transcribe data with few errors
Ability to type a minimum of 45 WPM
Intermediate knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Office Programs
Proficiency navigating through various websites

The Public Defender I is for entry-level, developing attorneys. Attorneys at this level perform legal work under the mentorship of more experienced attorneys within the office and are supervised by the Chief Public Defender or designated Deputy Defender.

Job Responsibilities:
Public Defender I represent adults charged with criminal felonies in their local district court jurisdiction, who are deemed indigent and unable to afford to hire an attorney. Attorneys in this position are expected to develop fundamental trial skills in their practice, and become proficient in managing all aspects of their caseload.

Education
* Must be a graduate from an ABA accredited law school
* Licensed attorney in good standing in the State of Kansas at the time of employment
