The Board Legal Counsel is the chief legal advisor to the Board of Trustees (“BOT”) Chairperson, the Board of Trustees, and the Chief of Staff of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The Board Legal Counsel is responsible for protecting OHA's legal and fiduciary interests as well as providing direct legal support to the BOT. This role ensures organizational compliance with all applicable state, federal, and trust laws, menos supports the Board of Trustees (BOT) in fulfilling its constitutional and statutory duties under HRS §10-5.
As a key member of the Board of Trustees' team, the Board Legal Counsel helps advance OHA's mission to improve conditions for Native Hawaiians through ethical governance, risk mitigation, legal stewardship of trust resources, and compliance oversight. Key areas of support include governance and compliance matters, procurement and contract oversight, board policies and procedures, conflict of interest safeguards, and the review and development of legal memoranda, standard operating procedures, and other board related documents. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

What You'll Do
As a Trial Attorney at our firm, your responsibilities will include:
Managing a High-Volume Caseload: You'll oversee approximately 150 cases, with around 50 actively in litigation each month, guiding each from intake through settlement or jury verdict.
Engaging with Clients: You'll maintain proactive and transparent communication, ensuring clients are informed and supported throughout the legal process.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
* graduation from high school, and
* two (2) years of legal clerical work experience involving the preparation, typing, and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents, and
* possession of a State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or other comparable driver's license at time of filing, as applicable to the position. You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire, if the position requires a driver's license. Substitution of education for required legal clerical experience:

Responsibilities
Represent clients in family law cases including divorce, child custody, and property division.
Prepare and present cases in court including hearings and trials.
Draft, review, and file legal documents such as petitions, motions, and agreements.
Advise clients on their legal rights and options concerning family law issues.
Negotiate settlements on behalf of clients in family law disputes.
Conduct legal research to stay informed about changes in family law and relevant case law.
Develop and maintain strong client relationships, providing compassionate support throughout the legal process.
Requirements
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Active license to practice law in the state of Hawai'i.
Must be able to travel to Hawai'i on a regular basis for court proceedings.
