The IDC's Southwest Virginia region of Public Defender Offices has openings for attorneys who are committed to advocating on behalf of indigent clients. The attorney will handle criminal cases for adults and juveniles in various stages of litigation. The IDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Assistant Public Defender reports to the Chief Public Defender of their office and is employed at-will. How will the Senior Personal Injury Legal Assistant/ Paralegal contribute to the TEAM?
Ability to multi-task and effectively communicate, problem-solve and handle tasks efficiently and professionally with all TEAM members and the public, with adaptability to diverse internal and external clientele.
Maintains strict confidentiality of all client information in accordance with attorney-client privilege and applicable state and federal privacy laws, while avoiding the unauthorized practice of law. Handles sensitive client data, case details, medical records, and communications with the utmost discretion and professionalism. Understands and adheres to ethical obligations regarding confidentiality, including proper storage, transmission, and discussion of client matters only in secure settings and with authorized personnel. Complies with firm policies on data security, and document retention protocols.
Understands and complies with company policies and procedures.
Must be able to work in-office as scheduled to meet with clients, meet and collaborate with fellow TEAM members, attend training sessions, and/or participate in other events.
Must be proficient in utilization of available technology including case management software, computers, databases, portals, and other software needed to successfully manage cases.
Maintains excellent customer service and interfaces with clients, providers, and team members according to policies and procedures.
Prepares documents, including but not limited to medical summaries, claims correspondence, and potentially pleadings, for attorney approval.
Interfaces with the clients on non-legal issues relating to the management of client's case; refers legal issues to the appropriate attorney(s).
Assists attorney(s) with written and verbal communications with adjusters and clients.
Conducts preparation for legal proceedings; submits appropriate information and legal forms/documents to the appropriate organizations; understands forms and procedures necessary to properly handle client's case as instructed by the appropriate attorney(s).
Ability to effectively communicate with clients to uncover pertinent information and data to include updated treatment status, medical information that could impact the case, changes in work status, and records information per operating procedure. Notifies the attorney of any changes, new information, concerns, or issues.
Demonstrates effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills to optimize case management. Investigates, reasons, and collects pertinent information in situations where only limited information may be available.
The Senior Personal Injury Paralegal/Legal Assistant collaborates with appropriate attorney(s) and other team members to effectively handle client cases including identification of relevant facts and issues to achieve optimal results for clients.
Gathers, processes, and organizes incoming medical records, bills, and other case related documents in a timely manner per procedure. Notifies the attorney when pertinent records and/or information is received and completes any associated tasks as needed.
Utilizes, manages, and properly completes assigned tasks per procedure.
Processes and reviews mail daily for additional information pertinent to case(s); documents any pertinent information and advises the appropriate attorney(s) when received.
Confirms balances and expenses; prepares the appropriate settlement documents for review by the attorney(s).
Interfaces with other team members to achieve office and departmental goals; may provide back up to other team members, including but not limited to client meetings and video conferences.
Ability and willingness to train, mentor, and guide lesser experienced team members when appropriate and/or requested to do so.
Experience:
3 plus years of prior Legal Assistant, Paralegal, or related experience.
Preferred (not required):
Bachelor's degree and/or Certification.
Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Experience with the Litify Case Management Platform

What You'll Do:
Our City Attorney's Office is currently recruiting for a vacancy which may be filled as an Assistant City Attorney and/or Deputy City Attorney. The job title and classification will ultimately be determined by the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The City Attorney's Office represents the City of High Point and performs highly complex legal work in a fast-paced environment for a wide variety of clients, including the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and City Staff across more than twenty departments. Similar to a general counsel's office or in-house attorney's office in the public or private sector, the focus here is practicing law - with no billable hour goals or business development requirements.
The position(s) will be assigned primary practice areas, as well as be responsible for performing other legal research and assignments as directed by the City Attorney. Primary practice areas may include the following:
General transactional law. Drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and prosecuting complex contracts. Types of contracts will include, but not be limited to, purchase agreements, services agreements, construction agreements, nonprofit organization agreements, interlocal agreements, and economic development agreements.
Real property and land use law. This position will provide advice and counsel related to acquisition of real property interests for City projects (right of way, easement, fee simple, lease, et al.), disposition of City owned real property, zoning, land use, planning, development, code enforcement, inspections, and community development matters.
Personnel and employment law, including but not limited to administrative law and regulatory compliance, drafting and reviewing personnel policies, guiding management through the grievance process, and litigation avoidance counseling.
Public utilities and public services, including but not limited to electric, water, sewer, stormwater, streets and sidewalks, and environmental services.
Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:
Drafts, reviews, and negotiates (as needed) various legal documents related to municipal operations, including but not limited to complex contracts, resolutions, ordinances, real property related documents, litigation related documents, et al.
Conducts legal research and prepares memoranda, briefs, legal opinions, and other legal documents in response to proposals, questions, and issues presented by the City Council, appointed boards and commissions, management, and staff.
Attends City Council meetings and appointed board and commission meetings, as assigned or requested by the City Attorney.
Represents the City in public meetings, legislative hearings, quasi-judicial hearings, administrative hearings, and courts of law, as assigned or requested by the City Attorney.
Coordinates complex litigation with outside law firms, as assigned or requested by the City Attorney.
Participates and acts as legal advisor and counsellor in City meetings.
Keeps abreast of court decisions and legislative changes related to municipal law and other areas of law relevant to municipalities.
Participates in special projects and other duties as assigned by City Attorney.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications - Assistant City Attorney
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited school of law.
North Carolina State Bar License active and in good standing, or ability to be admitted by comity within six (6) months from date of hire.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License.
Required Qualifications - Deputy City Attorney
All the above qualifications, with a minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working for a local government or other general counsel/in-house attorney office setting.
Experience representing local, state, or federal regulatory agencies, boards, or commissions.
Experience with government-related issues at the local, state, or federal level.
Experience drafting, reviewing, and interpreting municipal ordinances, administrative regulations, state law, or federal law.
