SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
This position is responsible for providing comprehensive legal support to attorneys and staff within the Law Department, specifically focusing on handling cases and administrative projects. The primary responsibilities include supporting attorneys in Amtrak's Litigation and Labor and Employment teams, as well as assisting with matters before regulatory bodies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Where applicable, the position collaborates with Senior Litigation Paralegals to effectively manage and advance legal matters.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Act as a point of contact for Amtrak's outside counsel in collecting case materials;
Monitor and update cases through an internal case management system, noting deadlines and major case updates;
Assist attorneys in carrying out legal research, including gathering and analyzing research data, such as statutes, decisions, legal arguments, codes, and documents;
Assist attorneys in drafting legal documents, including contracts, subpoena responses, preservation memoranda, and statements;
Liaise with numerous employees across multiple departments within Amtrak;
Preparing cases for attorneys by organizing exhibits, finalizing affidavits and legal correspondences, and maintaining documents in paper and electronic filing systems;
Assist attorneys in investigating facts and laws of cases, and search pertinent sources to determine causes of action and prepare cases;
Assist attorneys in interviewing witnesses and scheduling depositions;
Other special projects, legal support tasks, and administrative duties as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree or Paralegal Certificate, or equivalent and significant substantive experience

The salary/hourly range is $65,500 - $84,888. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund ("VCF") was created to provide compensation for any individual (or a personal representative of a deceased individual) who suffered physical harm or was killed as a result of the terrorist-related aircraft crashes of September 11, 2001 or the debris removal efforts that took place in the immediate aftermath of those crashes. The original VCF operated from 2001-2004. On January 2, 2011, President Obama signed into law the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (Zadroga Act) that reactivated the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund in October 2011. On December 18, 2015, President Obama signed into law a bill reauthorizing the Act and extending the Fund for five years. On July 29, 2019, President Trump signed into law H.R. 1327, The Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer, and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. The VCF is embarking on an exciting initiative to support its claim review process. The Claim Review Support Team will work with VCF and claim review leadership to support all aspects of the claim review process, with particular emphasis on claim and data management, claim assessment, knowledge management and training coordination.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Claim Review Assessor's responsibilities include:
Pre-screen: Responsible for following a checklist guide to complete "pre-screening" claims at the eligibility stage for all minimally required documentation and information prior to substantive review by the claim review team. This includes placing claims on NIOSH and Third-Party feeds, identifying missing documentation and information, and procedurally denying claims.
Document Processing: Responsible for processing Change of Attorney and Third-Party Verification letters received through the respective inboxes, as well as the Intake team. This involves proper categorization and labeling of incoming emails, confirming sufficiency of each form, ensuring no PII data discrepancies during processing, proper identification of claims, and upload of documents with zero PII misfiles.
Reassessment: Responsible for reviewing end-state claims with newly uploaded files to integrate back into the claims review processes. This includes reviewing the SOP Chart of documents submitted to guide if the submitted documents warrant reactivation of claims and if warranted, routing claims to the appropriate claims review process.
Special Projects: Works on special projects as assigned, focusing on document review, claim review, and coordination.

Role & Responsibilities:
