Position Description
Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) has an immediate opening in its New Windsor, NY office for a full-time staffattorney to work on housing matters. The attorney will serve low-income individuals and families with matters including eviction, unlawful lockouts, habitability issues and succession rights challenges. As many of our clients have protected housing or have specialized housing vouchers, the work will include section 8 and other hearings on voucher changes or terminations. The position will cover Orange County and occasionally Sullivan.
Duties of the Position: individual case work, administrative advocacy and litigation in city courts and justice courts, including appellate practice, and education and outreach efforts directed at community members, advocates and service providers. The person hired will also be expected to adhere to program and case handling standards, funder requirements, the highest professional standards, and be available as a resource to LSHV staff and access to justice communities. Occasional appearances in night court pertaining to housing matters will be required.
Qualifications
Member in good standing of the New York State Bar; or out of state admission with eligibility and willingness to be admitted in NYS. LSHV will consider law school graduates who plan to take the NYS Bar Exam
Understanding of the nature and dynamics of housing and benefits;
Ability to handle a large caseload;
Excellent people skills;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders;
Valid Driver License and access to own vehicle.
Preferred
Two or more years of legal experience, including litigation, preferably with background in housing;
Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services or similar program
Salary: $78,850 - $145,784, DOE, union scale, with excellent benefits that include medical, dental, vision, life insurance and long-term disability coverages, as well as a defined contribution to 403b, loan repayment assistance and paid parental leave. After a brief probationary period, this position may permit work from home up to two days per week.

LawNY's Geneva office seeks to fill an immediate opening for a Temporary Full-time StaffAttorney to provide eviction-related services in Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, Seneca and Yates Counties. This attorney will represent clients who are homeless or at risk of eviction and need legal and other services to stabilize their housing. The position is funded under an ERAP eviction prevention grant, and will end on September 30, 2026. The Geneva Office has a location in downtown Geneva, and satellite offices in Lyons and Geneseo. StaffAttorneys may be asked to work out of the Lyons and Geneseo Office offices as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will include some or all of the following duties:
Meet with clients facing housing instability to determine their needs.
Provide full-scope in-person representation of tenants facing eviction, homelessness and other civil legal problems related to eviction, including in town, village and city courts.
Assist clients in seeking and securing financial assistance which is related to stabilizing housing, including public benefits, subsidized housing and unemployment benefits.
Build relationships with community agencies providing services to our clients, including shelter, including in person meetings and establishing a presence at facilities providing services.
Provide litigation support, including pleadings, to other housing advocates.
Supervise temporary paralegals who are involved in outreach efforts with the courts and agencies.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
The beginning salary for a StaffAttorney at LawNY with no experience is $75,000 and the salary for a StaffAttorney with thirty years of experience is $111,100. Salary will be based on experience. LawNY is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program(PSLF).

ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time, term-limited, position of StaffAttorney, Senior StaffAttorney, or Senior Counsel in the State Supreme Court Initiative (SSCI) of the ACLU's National office in Washington, D.C., or New York, NY. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. This is a two-year, term-limited position.
Launched in 2023, the SSCI is dedicated to ensuring that: (1) people around the country have the broadest possible protections for their civil liberties under state constitutions, (2) state courts play an independent and robust role in developing and protecting state and federal rights, and (3) the public understands the importance of state courts and has meaningful access to them.
In roughly two and a half years, the SSCI has built a broad and substantial docket, covering a wide range of states and issues. To date, we have represented a party or participated as
amicus
in more than 55 cases spanning 30 state high courts, including on issues of access to justice, equal protection, free speech, voting rights, criminal justice, and reproductive rights.
This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Reporting to the SSCI Co-Director, the StaffAttorney, Senior StaffAttorney, or Senior Counsel will work to advance the SSCI's mission through appellate and to a lesser extent trial advocacy, public education, coordination with advocacy partners, research and writing, and other priority areas as needed.
YOUR DAY TO DAY
Participate in litigation on a wide range of issues in state appellate and trial courts, including by drafting briefs and other legal memoranda, researching and drafting pleadings, conducting oral arguments and evidentiary hearings, and engaging in motion practice and occasional discovery.
Identify trends in state constitutional litigation and develop litigation strategies to advance the mission of the ACLU, and the SSCI specifically
Identify and track cases percolating in state courts
Analyze legislation for potential litigation in state court on issues that the SSCI prioritizes
Work with and advise ACLU state affiliates and national ACLU Projects on matters involving state constitutional law and state court litigation
Support development of state civil liberties and civil rights doctrine across the country, including through trainings and the development of model pleadings
Assist with training and mentorship of legal fellows, interns, and paralegal
Engage in public speaking and the articulation of ACLU views to a variety of audiences

In roughly two and a half years, the SSCI has built a broad and substantial docket, covering a wide range of states and issues. To date, we have represented a party or participated as

COMPENSATION
The ACLU has a litigator scale that determines pay for attorneys in our Legal Department. The range of salaries are the following, based on year of law school graduation (please consult the hiring manager for specific salary details, based on individual circumstances)

3-5 years since law school graduation: $129,244-$152,480
6-10 years since law school graduation: $159,461- $179,891
