Richard Levitz, opened the first Levitz Furniture store in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Richard Levitz had two sons, Ralph and Leon, who opened another furniture store in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1936 bearing the family name. In the ensuing years, the Company added more showrooms. The "warehouse/showroom" concept that brought Levitz to the forefront of the furniture industry was pioneered in the early 1960's. After a very successful "Warehouse Sale," the family coupled showrooms and warehouses under one roof, which changed the way millions of customers shopped for furniture. Large selection, low cost and immediate availability are now the standards in the furniture industry. As a result of shrinking profits in the late 1990s, the Company was forced to reorganize, leaving the "warehouse/showrooms" behind. The Company focused its attentions on its strongest markets in order to develop a solid core of operations.
