Levy company history timeline

1978

Two years later, in 1978, Larry quit his job as well and joined his brother in the restaurant business, embarking on a career that allowed his natural talents to flower.

After Levy left his real estate job in 1978, he and his brother formed Levy Restaurants and the Levy Organization, a commercial real estate company.

1983

In 1983 Levy bought Ace Asphalt & Paving Co. of Flint and Medusa Cement Co. of Oakland County, Michigan, renaming the latter Milford Sand & Gravel Co.

1985

Video Trend had outlets in several markets, and in early 1985 added one near Chicago.

Walt Disney Company selected the Levys to create, own, and operate two restaurants at its Pleasure Island complex in Orlando, leading to the opening of the Fireworks Factory and the Portobello Yacht Club in 1985.

1986

1986: Levy acquires trucking, quarrying, concrete, and construction firms in Florida.

1987

In 1987 Levy's Colorado-based asphalt operations were expanded, and Colorado quarrying and sand/gravel businesses were bought.

1988

The year 1988 also saw another trucking business created, State Trucking, which hauled and paved asphalt.

Closer to home, in 1988 portions of Levy's Dix Avenue slag plant and Jefferson Marine Terminal facilities were rebuilt and upgraded, making the former more environmentally friendly.

1989

Launch of Foreign Operations: 1989

1989: Australian slag processing joint venture is formed.

1990

In 1990 Levy entered another new category, buying Mid-Michigan Music Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, for an estimated $2 million.

1990: Mid-Michigan Music Co. is purchased.

1991

In early 1991 Levy president and CEO David Moscow was dismissed due to philosophical differences with owner and board chairman Barbara Levy Kipper.

1991: United News Co. of Philadelphia is acquired.

1992

An Australian scrap detinning facility was added in 1992 under the name Australian Metal Recovery (AMR).

1994

On April 30, 1994 the company halted distribution of the remaining handful of papers it carried, which included the New York Times and Investor's Business Daily.

1994: Newspaper distribution ends; the Levy Music & Video unit is sold.

The restaurant division was active as well, with its most notable achievement being the establishment in Los Angeles in 1994 of DIVE!, a restaurant concept created in partnership with director Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, a former Disney executive.

1995

The Los Angeles DIVE! generated $10 million in sales during its first year of operation and led to the opening of a second DIVE! in Las Vegas in June 1995.

By 1995, Levy Restaurants was a sprawling operation, with 23 conventional restaurants and 17 specialty concessions.

1996

In 1996 Levy began a three-year run of distributorship acquisitions that would bring a total of nine new companies into the fold.

1996: Two joint ventures are formed in Thailand to process slag.

1998

In August 1998, Mark Levy sold most of his interests in Levy Restaurants to start a new, self-funded investment firm, ending his 22-year business partnership with his brother.

In late 1998 plans were announced for Levy's largest acquisition to date, the purchase of Dublin, Ohio-based United Magazine Co., or Unimag.

2000

Established in January 2000 as a telecommunications infrastructure contractor, The Levy Company’s primary line of work was initially in support of telecommunications providers expanding DSL coverage in their markets.

He founded The Levy Company, LP in 2000 and has been working at building the company ever since.

In 2000, Harry came to John with the opportunity to create The Levy Company, LP.

In 2000, Levy also formed a slag service company in Ashland, Kentucky, to operate as A-K Steel Corporation's Ashland plant.

2017

In September 2017, The Levy Company established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), enabling employees to reap the rewards of the Company’s continuing growth and success.

2018

In 2018, The Levy Company further expanded, adding a commercial electrical division.

2021

According to available information, 67% of projects in 2021 had no reported payment incidents.
