Lewis Bakeries company history timeline

1925

In 1925 Raymond Lewis and his two brothers, A.C. and Arnold, launched Lewis Bakeries in Anna, Il., with $300 they borrowed from their mother.

Bunny Bread Bakeries, which was founded in a log cabin in Anna in 1925, announced it was closing its Anna baking operations.

In 1925, three brothers took out a $300 mortgage on their mother’s house to open a bakery in a Southern Illinois cabin.

1926

The bakery was moved into this location in January, 1926, and entirely new equipment was installed.

1941

The year 1941 saw Lewis Brothers’ Bakery reaching an expansion of business which permitted the purchase of the Crowell building.

1944

A.C. was afflicted with a serious illness which resulted in his death, May 8, 1944, and Jack became manager of the bakery.

1950

The year 1950 found the Lewis Brothers’ Bakery expanded beyond the capacity of its location and plans were necessary to build with the idea that a location would be most suitable near the city limits rather than in the heart of Anna’s business section.

1956

A May 29, 1956, Missourian story announced the start of construction of the building shown above. “The structure, declared cost of which is $21,000, will be 130 feet long by 50 feet wide.

1965

Ken Steinhoff, Cape Girardeau Central High School Class of 1965, spent half a century in the ink-slinging business for papers in Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida.

1987

Becoming the first bakery to remove trans fats from all its products in 1987

1988

The Cape Girardeau bakery closed in 1988.

1991

In 1991, the first fat-free reduced-calorie bread, Healthy Life

1999

Debuting the market’s first half loaf, Baby Bunny 1/2 Loaf, in 1999

2000

Bringing the first carb-dieting bread to the market with Healthy Life in 2000

2008

He retired in 2008 and has been spending time scanning hundreds of thousands of images because “photos once taken as news have grown enough whiskers that they’ve become history.”

2019

As of 2019, H. Dean Short, the grandson of R. Jack Lewis Sr., serves as company president, and Lewis remains one of the few independent wholesale bakeries in the Midwest, looking forward to serving generations to come.
