Responsibilities What You'll Do as a Crew Leader As a Crew Leader at Lewis Services, you will oversee and manage a crew performing utility vegetation management, ensuring safe and efficient tree trimming and line clearing operations for the utility and other customers. * Supervise daily tree crew operations and ensure safe, efficient work practices, including training, onboarding, coaching, discipline, and ensure high-quality and efficient job performance. * Plan and assign tasks based on crew members' skills and job requirements. * Monitor and evaluate crew performance, including new hires, for training, promotion, and disciplinary actions. * Maintain up-to-date contact information for all crew members and report any availability or fitness-for-duty concerns to the General Foreman. * Conduct field training, retraining, and job briefings to ensure crew readiness. * Enforce safety standards and company policies, report unsafe conditions or incidents immediately. * Identify jobsite hazards and implement safeguards such as barriers and warning signs. * Make decisions regarding work slowdown due to weather or safety concerns. * Perform and direct tree trimming, removal, and clearance near energized lines using climbing or aerial lift techniques. * Operate and oversee use of equipment, including trucks, chippers, aerial lifts, and power saws. * Interpret work orders, utility drawings, and symbols related to line voltage and equipment. * Maintain clean and organized work vehicles and job sites. * Communicate with property owners to explain work, obtain access, and secure written permissions. * Promote positive relationships with customers, the public, utility representatives, and other contractors. * Cooperate with emergency services when blocking streets or driveways. * Maintain accurate records and reports on crew performance, incidents, equipment issues, and completed work. * Investigate incident reports and damage claims as assigned. * Monitor and control crew costs through efficient use of resources and equipment. * Stay informed on company policies, union agreements, and equipment standards. * Emergency Response * Respond to emergency situations to eliminate hazards and assist in service restoration. * Exercise sound judgment in urgent scenarios to protect life and property. * Request major tool or equipment repairs as needed. * Travel frequently, including overnight stays, as required. * Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications What You Bring * At least 3 years of experience in a tree crew or in utility vegetation management. * Strong knowledge and understanding of the ANSI Z133 Safety Requirements and A300 Pruning Standards for arboricultural operations. * Proficient in the identification of poisonous plants. * Proficiency in electrical circuit basics and interpreting circuit maps. * Advanced in tree ascent/descent using ropes and a safety saddle, and skilled in aerial lift operations. * Crew Leader Technical Knowledge and Skills Certification (or ability to complete). * Valid driver's license, CDL (as needed), and required medical certification. * Acquire and keep the required training and licenses for the safe and proper use of herbicides. * CPR and First Aid certified (provided by Lewis). * Strong leadership, effective communication, and decision-making skills. * Ensure compliance with all applicable state, local, and federal regulations. An Assistant is responsible for preparing the job site and loading and unloading trucks with logs, brush, and debris. This position services and maintains equipment, is responsible for directing traffic, and cleans up the job site. An Assistant will assist tree crews by working on the ground and handing tools and heavy materials to crew members. A Bucket Truck Operator is responsible for assisting with the clearing and removal of trees along electrical power lines and right-of-ways. This position operates an aerial lift device (bucket truck) to reach branches interfering with electric lines. While completing assigned duties, you will also operate chain saws, pruners, brush chippers, and may be called upon to climb trees using climbing equipment. Responsible for being mindful of controlling crew costs including effective use of manpower, proper work methods, amount of trimming, and operation of equipment. Considers inclement weather conditions and determines when to start or stop work, dependent upon its effect on employees and the nature of the work. Safeguards employees and public from hazards in and around work area. Cooperates with customer, police, and fire departments when blocking street or driveways. Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, etc. to protect employees as well as the public. Trained to perform tree and bucket rescue. Follows and enforces safe work practices, rules and policies. Responsible for truck inspection, proper working conditions, as well as necessary repairs to tools, trucks and other work equipment. Requests major repairs or replacements when required. Maintains good housekeeping on truck and at worksite locations. In emergency situations, determines proper action to be taken to eliminate hazards to life and property and the trimming/removal of trees, if necessary, to expedite the restoration of service by calling out crew personnel and performing other activities connected with emergency work. Trims and/or removes trees by climbing with the aid of a ladder, safety belt, climbing line, powered trimmer lift truck, or works from the ground using saws/pruners. Will cut branches or trunk sections and drops or lowers them to the ground with lines. Uses appropriate tools, will fell trees or trimmed trunks and split them into manageable pieces. Sprays stumps and brush with hand-spraying equipment to prevent further growth. Loads and unloads trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris and/or feeds brush into a wood chipper. Repairs slight damage to lawns, fences, and walks caused by tree trimming. Services gasoline, air, and hand-powered tools and other equipment. Relays hand-signals, directs traffic, drives and operates trucks and equipment as assigned, and keeps trucks and work area clear and orderly. Trains new employees on proper procedures. Works around hazardous equipment and in close proximity to energized power lines. Works around excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, wood chipper and must wear proper personal protective equipment. Is exposed to all temperatures and weather; will be exposed to nature, i.e., irritating plants, biting or stinging insects, dust, etc. May work on rough terrain. Minimum Requirements: Has a minimum of 3 years' experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews and/or has successfully completed applicable performance reviews. Possess excellent leadership skills and be able to handle stressful situations along with being able to multi-task. Has a basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits and correct arboricultural techniques for the trimming, pruning, repairing, maintaining and removing, as applies to working in close proximity to energized conductors.
