As a Lead Accountant on the Accounting Policy and Controls team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effectiveness of the Company's governance, risk management, compliance and control practices. You will support the application of accounting policy across assigned areas and drive impactful insights that ensure continuous improvements in the external audit and internal attestation processes. The role is hands-on, requires strong judgment, and involves close collaboration with both internal stakeholders in Finance and across the business, as well as external partners such as regulators and auditors. It is a strong fit for a naturally curious, proactive person who spots opportunities, simplifies complexity, and drives solutions that stick.
Responsibilities:
Manage the attestation program for internal controls over financial reporting, including risk assessments, control evaluations, and resolution of complex accounting issues related to reserves, reinsurance, and related insurance transactions, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines (SOX, Model Audit Rule, AICPA, and COSO).
Support adoption and implementation of new accounting standards that impact the control environment within assigned areas.
Coordinate with internal audit, external auditors and regulatory exam teams to support financial statement audits and attestation; manage control testing, remediation activities and documentation requests.
Prepare and deliver clear, technically robust communications to management, proactively escalating control or audit issues and partnering closely with stakeholders to develop, drive, and monitor effective action plans.
Lead efforts to improve audit and attestation processes, leveraging automation, analytics and new technologies where appropriate to drive efficiencies and strengthen controls.
Establish and foster strong connections with leaders and key functional stakeholders to then effectively collaborate, share insights and best practices, build a deep understanding of their processes and initiatives, and challenge the status quo when appropriate.
Serve as a mentor and technical resource to more junior team members; may oversee or coordinate work performed by contractors.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (Accounting or Finance) required. Advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of accounting or finance experience.
Experience implementing any accounting standard changes, testing controls or working with auditors
Familiarity with actuarial and reinsurance concepts/processes and/or working knowledge of P&C insurance.
Internal or external audit experience a plus.
Project management experience a plus.
Experience presenting to management, strong stakeholder relationship, ability to influence.
Must demonstrate attention to detail in a fast-paced work environment and the ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions to achieve results.
Knowledge of interrelationships between large scale enterprise-wide systems and how the information flows through the organization.

**Resp & Qualifications** This intern position resides within the Corporate Tax Team, part of the larger Finance Division at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Ideally this opportunity would run as a **year-round** internship program. The Corporate Tax Department at CareFirst is a fast-faced department that handles the day-to-day functions of corporate tax including account reconciliations, journal entries, IRS regulations research and analysis, and the month end close process. This internship will provide an opportunity to work in an environment and participate in a variety of functions to obtain hands on experience.
**PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:**
+ Prepare & update excel spreadsheets for tax return or personal property tax return workpapers
+ Research General Ledger discrepancies and uploading journal entries
+ Research any unpaid personal property tax bills or bills not received
+ Assist with ad hoc reporting requests from internal divisions
+ Monitor Tax Filing Calendar to ensure are filings are on time
+ Assist with account reconciliation processes and research
+ Assist with pulling audit support for internal and external audits
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
**Education Level:** This position requires an individual working towards a Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University. Junior or Senior Undergraduate student targeting a major in Accounting and/or Tax Reporting with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Senior Finance Manager, prepares various weekly and monthly statistical reports.

You'll Get a Chance To
Prepare complex individual and high-net-worth tax returns and preparations (1040s)
Research technical tax matters and prepare written communications
Support tax planning projects and develop strategies for clients
Analyze financial records and transactions to determine tax liability
Assist with managing client expectations and deadlines

Communicate tax matters to senior associates and managers
Continuously learn through trainings, mentorship, and on-the-job experience
What You Bring to the Team
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited college/university
1+ year of recent public accounting experience focused on tax
Working toward CPA licensure (or already licensed)
Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and tax preparation software preferred
Ability to sit for the CPA exam if not already licensed

What You Should Know
This is a full-time position and will be required to be onsite.

At Aldrich, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensations decisions are dependent on facts and circumstances of each candidate. Aldrich makes internal equity a consideration in all pay decisions. A reasonable estimate of the current annual salary for the full-time position is $71,500 - 80,000 along with a signing bonus.
