The City of Palo Alto's Library department is looking to hire multiple Library Specialists.TheLibraryis seeking a dynamic library professional to provide excellent customer service to our community, collaborate on projects to improve and expand services, and contribute to a culture of innovation, creativity, and quality service. The Palo Alto City Library is a five-branch library system serving a community that seeks high-quality, innovative, and dependable library services.
This is a Service Employees International Union (SEIU) position.

Essential Duties

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not

limited to, the following:

Public Services

* Performs assigned duties required to effectively operate circulation systems and procedures.

* Performs all routine circulation tasks required to serve public.

* Collects, records, tabulates and deposits monies received daily from all library facilities, complying with cash handling procedures.

* Schedules, trains, and coordinates work of clerical, temporary and volunteer staff in variety of routines.

* Oversees the work of Library Clerks and Library Pages to maintain workflow.

* Assists customers with library database and the process of downloading library e-books.

* Processes LINK+ materials from other library systems and assists customers locating book through the LINK+ catalog.

* Other duties and projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:

* High school Diploma or equivalent

and

* Two years of work experience

Title: LIBRARY SPECIALIST - full-time 40 hours
Reports to: Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non - Exempt

Pay Rate: $18.50 - $20.00

Purpose: Welcome and assist patrons in the use of the library by delivering outstanding, inclusive service while keeping current on internal communications and library offerings in order to connect patrons with the appropriate resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

80% PATRON ASSISTANCE AND MATERIALS HANDLING

General patron assistance:

* · Greets all library visitors and provides proactive assistance
* · Assists patrons with library account inquiries, including cash register transactions
* · Provides advisory services to patrons
* · Assists patrons with basic reference questions
* · Connects patrons with other library staff as needed
* · Promotes and supports library resources, programs and events
* · Listens to patron feedback and shares through appropriate channels
* · Sets expectations for library use, de-escalates and resolves patron concerns
* · Straightens and cleans up the library to provide a welcoming experience

Technology assistance:

* · Assists patrons with basic technology and troubleshooting questions, including assistance with tablets, phones and other devices
* · Assists patrons with library technology offerings, such as e-books and online databases
* · Troubleshoots library technology and equipment, such as copiers and printers
* · Assists patrons with reservable spaces, including basic AV equipment support
* · Connects patrons with other library staff as needed for intermediate and advanced technology needs

Materials handling:

* · Helps manage library materials collection
* · Merchandizes library materials and maintains library displays
* · Processes and shelves library materials and patron holds

20% LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT:

* · Keeps current on new library resources, trends, technology and offerings

Minimum Qualifications:

* · Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Activities:

Physical activities required to perform essential duties include:

* Frequency or repetitive actions which includes typing, shelving materials, occasionally opening and closing media cases.
* Bending, grasping, stretching without limitations which includes reaching into bins for materials, moving bins and carts filled with materials, shelving and shifting materials at various height levels.
* Lifting above your waist, head etc. up to 25 lbs.
