Licking County company history timeline

1800

The first trading post was also built in 1800 by Captain Samuel Elliott so he could trade with the Native Americans in the area.

1802

The city of Newark was laid out by John Burnet, John Cumming and George Burnet in 1802.

1808

John Stadden was elected first Sheriff in 1808, the year Licking County was created.

1825

The construction of the Ohio Canal began in Licking County on July 04, 1825.

1850

Early manufacturing efforts in Licking County were begun by the Newark Machine Works, established in 1850, which manufactured portable engines and saw mills until the outbreak of the Civil War.

1852

The first railroad into Newark was the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark in 1852.

1871

In 1871, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad headquartered its stops in Newark, making it the largest shops on the route west of the Allegheny Mountains.

1876

1910

On July 08, 1910, a public lynching was held on the square in downtown Newark, after the victim was broken out of the county jail by a mob.

1983

Jump up ↑ Hall, L. (1983, October 23). On land where buffaloes once roamed, early settlers founded town of Newark.

1999

In 1999, the per capita income in the county was 26,891 dollars.

2000

It is predominantly rural, with less than two percent of the county’s 687 square miles consisting of urban areas. It was the county’s largest community in 2000.

2008

Licking County's bicentennial was celebrated in 2008.
