• Reviews the medical record by applying utilizationreview criteria, to assess clinical, financial, and resource consumption. Enters clinical reviews into the software program. Maintains close communication with external reviewers/internal financial counselors/patient access personnel and performs certification activities as required by payor.
• Monitors and identifies patterns or trends in utilization management. Monitors potential and actual denials and coordinates with nurse Care Manager and/or Social Worker for any follow up necessary. Documents in software program the actions taken to coordinate care and avoid denials. Assists nurse Care Managers in communicating with the patient denied hospital days as well as the issuance of Medicare forms including HINN, Detailed Notice of Discharge to patients/family/significant other when they are in disagreement with the discharge plan arranged by attending and Care Management personnel.
• Coordinates with the Care Manager to achieve optimal and efficient patient outcomes, while decreasing length of stay and avoid delays and denied days. Utilizes Physician Advisor and administrative personnel for unresolved issues. Identifies opportunities for expedited appeals and collaborates with the Care Manager and Physician Advisor to resolve payer issues. Other tasks as assigned.
• Sends appropriate referrals/escalations to the physician advisors to review case not met with criteria.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Current RN license in MD (or Compact State as applicable)
• Associate's Degree in Nursing required; BSN or higher preferred
• Minimum of 3 years of experience; 5+ years of experience preferred

This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC who have greater than 12 months experience. This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in nursing governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Under general supervision and with attending physician input, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating, managing and communicating the plan of treatment to patients and their families. Specifically, the incumbent assists in communications with patients; triages patients and patient issues, performs symptom management, and teaches patients regarding their disease process and treatment. In addition, the nurse coordinator collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team and utilizes clinical outcomes data to support innovative and cost-effective changes to clinical practice. Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the practice setting, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance. This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in practice setting governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and UMMS philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
Qualifications
1. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required. Up-to-date status on all mandatory training and classes.
2. Bachelor's degree required. BSN required for hires after July 1, 2008.
3. One year nursing experience required, ambulatory/outpatient experience or population specific experience preferred. Solid knowledge and clinical skills.
4. Current CPR certification required.
5. Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years or 5 per year.
6. Member of a professional organization.
7. Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.
