LifeShare Blood Center company history timeline
In 1942 civic-minded residents who realized a blood bank was needed for emergencies created by WWII, founded the Shreveport Memorial Blood Bank.
LifeShare Blood Center, established in Shreveport, La. in 1942, regularly supplies blood components and related services to more than 100 medical facilities and hospitals throughout Louisiana, East Texas and South Arkansas.
In August 1947, Jackson Medical Laboratory and Blood Bank first opened its doors on the second floor of 607 Highland Avenue in Jackson, Tennessee.
The first regulations were introduced through the National Institutes of Health, and in 1947 the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) was founded just as many local communities were developing their own community blood centers.
In 1972, the Blood Center was sold to a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.
ImpactLife 501(c)(3) not-for-profit blood center was established in 1974.
In 1974, the National Blood Policy was developed to assure a safe and adequate blood supply.
Mobile operations were also initiated, with the John Deere Foundry sponsoring the first drive in 1975.
ImpactLife moved to a headquarters facility on Locust Street in Davenport in 1976, providing the new organization with sufficient space to accommodate growth in the coming years.
Resource sharing, or the shipment of excess product to other communities in need, grew in the 1980’s and quickly became a source of operating revenue for the organization.
In 1983, ImpactLife had an incident in which bacterial contamination was found in units of blood.
Operating as a nonprofit organization, during its 70 years the blood bank has had different names to reflect its growth and in 1996 it became LifeShare Blood Centers and now operates throughout many areas of Louisiana, East Texas, and southern Arkansas.
In 2012, ImpactLife laid the groundwork for an iron replacement study.
In 2014, ImpactLife opened a new laboratory, distribution hub and administration center to support its Springfield-based operations.
