Team History 1992 – Present / Tampa Bay Lightning Celebrities with the Most Children n/a >
Since the Lightning's establishment as an NHL expansion franchise in 1992, five ownership groups have headed the organization and aided in its journey toward becoming the world-class, championship contender that it is today.
In 1995–96 Tampa Bay posted its first winning season, earning a playoff berth as the eighth (lowest) seed in the Eastern Conference.
Though the group labored financially, it guided the Lightning through the organization's infancy, leading it to a first-ever playoff berth in 1996 and securing funding for the hockey-specific Ice Palace in downtown Tampa, now known as AMALIE Arena.
One bright spot during that period came in 1998 when Tampa Bay drafted centre Vincent Lecavalier, who would go on to set almost every major team scoring record.
Palm Beach businessman Art Williams purchased the Lightning in 1998 and immediately made his stance on the direction of the franchise known with his boisterous, "Are you a stud or a dud?" introductory speech, promising postseason and championship success.
In 2003–04 Tampa Bay—behind the stellar play of the league’s leading scorer, Martin St Louis—had the best record in the Eastern Conference and advanced to the Stanley Cup finals.
In 2003 the Lightning returned to the postseason and notched its first playoff series win.
In 2008, Oren Koules -- a Hollywood producer widely known for his horror-film franchise, Saw -- and former NHL forward Len Barrie purchased the Lightning in a joint partnership from Palace Sports & Entertainment.
When Jeff Vinik finalized a purchase agreement to assume ownership of the Lightning in February 2010, he promised to transition the franchise into a world-class organization.
The change paid immediate dividends: in 2011 the Lightning returned to the postseason and advanced to the conference finals.
The team traded away franchise icon St Louis during the 2013–14 season but still placed second in its division at the end of that campaign and qualified for the postseason.
The Lightning made another deep playoff run in 2015–16 before ultimately being eliminated by the eventual champion Pittsburgh Penguins in a close seven-game conference finals series.
They then came within a Game 7 victory of returning to the Final in 2016 before being eliminated by the eventual champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final.
Tampa Bay came roaring back in 2017–18, posting the best record in the Eastern Conference that season and advancing to the conference finals, in which the team again lost in a seven-game series.
The Lightning had a historic 2018–19 regular season, winning 62 games, which tied an NHL record for most wins in a season.
In the 2021–22 season Tampa Bay looked to become the first team in almost 40 years to win three consecutive Stanley Cups.
Vancouver Canucks now have two players named Elias Pettersson after the 2022 NHL Draft
