  • Founding ML Scientist

    Greylock 4.5company rating

    San Jose, CA jobs

Stage: Seed Team Size: < 10 We're looking for an Applied RS who can run the gamut of ML from infra to modeling and own the entire ML pipeline--taking advanced models into production. Our ideal candidate will be looking to build a co-pilot product from the ground up: helping to drive everything from key architectural decisions, applying SOTA methods, and shipping advanced production models in close collaboration with the founders. In key role, you will have real product ownership and the chance to influence not just what gets built, but how it gets built in a true 0->1 scenario. If you have 5+ years of experience in Machine Learning (infra and modeling) with 1+ years post-training LLM's and are thinking about starting your own company someday, this could be a great entry-way for you. Not only would you get real-world experience with something so early, but you'd get a chance to make a name for yourself with our investment team as well (making it much easier to get a chance to pitch us on your own idea in the future). About Greylock Greylock is a 1st-tier, early-stage venture capital firm that partners with exceptional founders at the seed and Series A stages. Our mission is to help realize rare potential - backing category-defining companies such as Figma, Anthropic, Ramp, Abnormal Security, Rubrik, Airbnb, LinkedIn, Roblox, Dropbox, and Coinbase. We're looking for smart and curious individuals to join our growing team and drive our ML work. On our Machine Learning team, you'll build the deep learning models that power our trading strategies, supported by our rapidly growing computing cluster with thousands of high-end GPUs. Trading poses unusual challenges-large models and nonstationary datasets in a competitive multi-agent environment-that force us to search for novel techniques. At Jane Street, our researchers, engineers, and traders sit a few feet away from each other and work together to train models, architect systems, and run trading strategies. Depending on the day, we might be diving deep into market data, tuning hyperparameters, debugging distributed training performance, or studying how our model likes to trade in production. We'll rely on your in-depth knowledge of the machine learning landscape and understanding of a variety of approaches-drawn from LLMs, image models, RL agents, recommendation systems, or classical ML methods-to shape the future of ML at Jane Street. You'll train models for the next generation of our deep learning-based trading strategies, and build the fundamental understanding we need to tackle new markets and situations. You'll also be hiring new colleagues, attending conferences, and teaching techniques to teammates-all of which we consider to be real and impactful parts of the job. About you If you've never thought about a career in finance, you're in good company. Many of us were in the same position before working here. If you have a curious mind and a passion for solving interesting problems, we have a feeling you'll fit right in. There's no fixed set of skills we are looking for, but you should bring: Practical experience working on empirical ML problems An ability to apply logical and mathematical thinking to all kinds of problems Intellectual curiosity and excitement about state-of-the-art research across many ML problem domains Fluency with a versatile set of models and tricks The hands-on coding skills needed to rapidly implement and iterate on your ideas in Python and your favorite ML framework An eagerness to ask questions, admit mistakes, and learn new things If you're a recruiting agency and want to partner with us, please reach out to ********************************** .

    New York, NY jobs

Our goals are to give you a real sense of what it's like to work at Jane Street full time as a Machine Learning Researcher, and a truly unparalleled educational experience. You'll work side by side with experienced ML Researchers on projects that we've selected for their combination of novel ML ideas and relevance to real-world systematic trading strategies. You'll learn how we think about markets through challenging classes and activities, and practice using established methods alongside our own unique twists to train practical models. At Jane Street, the lines between research, technology, and trading are intentionally blurry. As our strategies grow more sophisticated, close collaboration is essential for continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible. We work with petabytes of data, a computing cluster with hundreds of thousands of cores, and a growing GPU cluster containing thousands of high-end GPUs. Trading poses unusual challenges-large models and nonstationary datasets in a competitive multi-agent environment-that force us to search for novel techniques. You'll spend the bulk of your internship working closely with full-time machine learning researchers on projects drawn from their own work. You might conduct an end-to-end study of an unexplored dataset, try a new modeling paradigm for a thorny problem, or consider blue-sky approaches that we're still trying to figure out. The problems we work on rarely have clean, definitive answers, and they often require insights from colleagues across the firm with different areas of expertise. Depending on the day, you might be diving deep into market data, tuning hyperparameters, debugging training issues, or analyzing the predictions your model makes. Note that given the IP-sensitive nature of machine learning research at Jane Street, it is unlikely that any research findings associated with the internship will be suitable for outside academic publication. About You If you've never thought about a career in finance, you're in good company. Many of us were in the same position before working here. If you have a curious mind and a passion for solving interesting problems, we have a feeling you'll fit right in. You should be: A PhD student or postdoc with practical experience working on empirical ML research problems Interested in applying logical and mathematical thinking to all kinds of problems Curious about the machine learning landscape and excited to apply state-of-the-art techniques drawn from many problem domains Fluent with a versatile set of models and tricks Able to rapidly implement and iterate on your ideas in Python and your favorite ML framework Eager to ask questions, admit mistakes, and learn new things If you'd like to learn more, you can read about our interview process and meet some of the team.
