It all happened by accident, when in 1959-ish Lilly (McKim) Pulitzer—a stylish Palm Beach hostess and socialite whose husband Peter Pulitzer owned several Florida citrus groves—needed a project of her own.
The Duke of Windsor was a fan, claiming in a 1968 column that he owned a pair of Lilly bathing trunks.
In a 1971 interview with the Palm Beach Post, Lilly recalled, "The first Lillys were made from fabrics I'd buy in the dime stores in West Palm Beach.
The brand was revived by Scott A. Beaumont and James B. Bradbeer Jr., the founders of Sugartown Worldwide, in 1993 and Pulitzer stayed on as a creative consultant.
By 2010 Oxford Industries bought Sugartown Worldwide for $60 million and up to $20 million in additional funds if retail targets were met, according to New York Times reporting.
Lilly Pulitzer earned $248 million in net sales and had a total operating income of $86 million in 2017, according to the parent company's Securities and Exchange Commission annual report.
