Lincoln Center Theater company history timeline

1985

Lincoln Center Theater was re-established in 1985 under the leadership of Chairman John V. Lindsay, Director Gregory Mosher and Executive Producer Bernard Gersten, and was named "the pre-eminent theater in the country" by The New York Times.

In 1985, Richmond Crinkley was replaced by Gregory Mosher, a veteran of Chicago's Goodman Theater.

1987

1988

By 1988, the theater was routinely selling out, and the theater company had made some $35 million in ticket sales.

1990

The newest of the campus’s major structures, the Samuel B. and David Rose Building, opened in 1990.

In 1990, Lincoln Center spent some $180 million on its new Samuel B. and David Rose Building, which gave the Juilliard School space for dormitories as well as administrative offices.

1994

In 1994, Lincoln Center chose a new chair of its board, the retired opera singer Beverly Sills.

1999

In early 1999, Lincoln Center announced that it was considering selling a painting by the American artist Jasper Johns that had hung in the New York State Theater lobby for the past 35 years.

1999: Constituent Development Project is founded to plan renovation.

2001

After September 11, 2001, and a major decline in the stock market, the project was scaled back by almost half, to a projected $675 million.

2002

The longstanding summer Mostly Mozart series ran into trouble in its 2002 season, when contract negotiations between the musicians and Lincoln Center broke down.

2004

Opened in 2004, this hall is home to Jazz at Lincoln Center, and its acoustics were designed specifically for jazz performances.

2005

Lincoln Center was still at the beginning of an enormous fundraising campaign and the many daunting challenges of renovating the arts complex in 2005, and the way seemed difficult.

2008

In 2008 the building was renamed the David H. Koch Theater, following a promise by the oil billionaire to donate $100 million over 10 years.

2011

The building on the opposite side of the fountain from Geffen Hall, the theater has been the home of the New York City Ballet ever since, and until 2011 it was home to the New York City Opera as well.

For instance, “War Horse,” which made its United States debut here in 2011, went on to win five Tonys, including Best Play.

2012

In June 2012, LCT opened a new 2-story addition on the roof of the Vivian Beaumont Theater.

A third theater, the Claire Tow Theater, was added to the roof in 2012.

2016

Another regular series, the summertime Mostly Mozart Festival, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016.
