Linn-Mar Community School District company history timeline
On February 1, 1959 thirty-eight acres, just north of the Main Elementary building (LRC), were purchased for $30,000 from Carl Wallace on which the district’s new high school was to be constructed.
The school opened the first week of September 1959 with 13 teachers, 19 seniors, 27 juniors, 39 sophomores and 34 freshmen.
Despite a district name change in 1959 and three merger votes with Marion Independent — all of which failed — Linn-Mar has had continual growth and retained a sense of community for over six decades.
In April 1960, a bond issue of $85,000 was approved for the first addition to the school.
June 1960 marked the high school’s first graduation ceremony where 19 seniors were honored.
1961 – Indian Creek Elementary opened.
1961 – East wing classrooms added to provide space for grades 7 & 8.
By 1962, the Design, Engineering and Materials wing of the building was added.
1962 – Football Field and Track added behind Indian Creek Elementary
1963 – Junior High School opened.
In 1963, a junior high school building was constructed in the middle of the campus, halfway between the high school and main elementary.
1963 – District’s first Junior High School constructed. (Now the south wing of the High School)
Prior to 1966, all indoor athletic events took place in the present LRC gym.
1966 – Gymnasium (now the Learning Center), Classrooms and offices added.
On May 1, 1967, 20 acres of land was purchased to allow for an expansion to the high school.
In 1967, Additional classroom space was added to the east side of the building, and Wilkins became a Kindergarten through 6th-grade attendance center.
1968 – Bowman Woods Elementary opened.
In 1969, The high school celebrated it’s tenth year, enrollment had risen to 525.
Novak later became Linn-Mar’s Maintenance Supervisor, a position he held until his retirement in 1975.
1995 – New media centers and remodeling at Indian Creek and Bowman Woods Elementary, 14-room addition to junior/senior high.
In 1995, Linn-Mar Intermediate School was built to house students in grades 5 and 6.
1999 – Westfield Elementary opened in November.
Oak Ridge opened in 2003 and housed students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, while Excelsior continued as a 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade building.
2007 – Voters in Linn County approved a 10-year School Infrastructure Local Option (SILO) Sales Tax on February 13, 2007.
Linn Grove Elementary opened on August 20, 2007, under the leadership of Principal Shannon Bisgard.
2008: Echo Hill Elementary opens to house K-5 students previously taught at Oak Ridge.
Oak Ridge becomes a 6-8 middle school 2009: Transportation and Operations & Maintenance move to their new building on 62nd Street.
2009 – Linn-Mar celebrated 60 years.
In 2010, the former Junior High, the south end of the high school, was remodeled.
2010 – Current Novak building constructed and opens
2011: The multi-purpose stadium and parking project was completed.
In 2012, classrooms were renovated and a new main office entrance was created.
2013 – Baseball/Softball Complex constructed on the Oak Ridge Campus
2014: Oak Ridge Auxillary Gym and performance platform constructed.
2015-17 – The district began a $30 million dollar renovation and improvement project at Linn-Mar High School.
In 2015, the Board of Education approved a plan for an extensive renovation and building expansion.
2018-19 – In September 2018 district voters approved a $55 million dollar bond referendum to allow for the construction of two new intermediate schools.
A double groundbreaking ceremony was held June 27, 2019, first at the site of Hazel Point Intermediate followed by another ceremony at Boulder Peak.
As of the fall of 2020, students from Indian Creek, Linn Grove, Novak, and Wilkins attend Boulder Peak Intermediate before moving on to Excelsior Middle School.
As of the fall of 2020, students from Bowman Woods, Echo Hill, and Westfield Elementary feed into Hazel Point Intermediate.
2021: Thousand of dollars in permanent repairs are completed at all buildings following the derecho.
