ERISA Associate Attorney
Litigation associate job in Chicago, IL
You didn't go to law school to spend three years reviewing 401(k) plan documents in a windowless office.
You should be advising private equity funds on their biggest deals, shaping DOL guidance that moves markets, and telling Goldman Sachs whether their structured product passes ERISA muster-not just running prohibited transaction checklists.
You're ready to be a trusted advisor on billion-dollar transactions, not just an ERISA compliance clerk.
A top AmLaw firm is expanding its elite ERISA Fiduciary practice to meet surging demand from financial institutions, asset managers, and private funds navigating the most complex regulatory landscape in decades.
This isn't about filling a spot on the bench. This is about adding a sharp, hungry lawyer to a practice that advises on the deals you read about in the WSJ.
What You'll Actually Do:
Advise private equity and hedge funds on ERISA compliance for fund formation and complex transactions
Work directly with clients on credit agreements, structured finance products, and alternative investments
Draft comment letters on proposed DOL regulations that will shape the industry
Provide real-time ERISA counsel on live deals-your analysis drives whether transactions move forward
Build expertise across private funds, financial products, and plan sponsor matters (not just one narrow lane)
What You Bring:
1-4 years of experience (ERISA background helpful but not required-they'll train analytical thinkers)
Exceptional writing and analytical skills (you'll be drafting client memos and regulatory comments, not just reviewing forms)
Meticulous attention to detail without losing sight of business objectives
JD from 2021-2024; strong academic credentials
Bar admission in DC or Illinois (or ability to waive in)
What You Get:
Top Compensation: Cravath scale pay + bonus
Sophisticated Work: Advise on transactions that shape the financial services industry
Direct Client Exposure: Work with household name institutions from day one
Regulatory Impact: Help draft the rules that govern trillion-dollar markets
Practice Diversity: Exposure to private funds, structured products, and plan sponsor work-not just one repetitive task
The Catch: This practice sits at the intersection of finance and regulation. You need to understand both complex financial structures AND arcane ERISA rules. It's intellectually demanding, and they're selective about who they add.
This is your chance to join an ERISA practice that actually advises on deals that matter.
