POSITION SUMMARY

Essential Functions:
Provide both mentoring to KIND pro bono attorneys and direct legal representation to KIND clients.
In the pro bono mentoring function, provide robust consultation and technical assistance to pro bono attorneys who have accepted a KIND case.
In the direct representation function, perform ordinary functions of legal counsel including legal research and formulating the legal strategy for the case; conducting client interviews; appearing before immigration and/or state courts or agencies; and drafting and filing court pleadings and applications for benefits.
Supervise interns and/or other non-attorney staff as needed including:

Central California Legal Services (CCLS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1966 for the purpose of providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals. CCLS core counties include Fresno, Kings, Mariposa, Merced, Tulare, and Tuolumne. CCLS's health work also extends to San Luis Obispo, Monterey, San Benito, and Stanislaus counties. In Madera County, CCLS provides limited services to seniors and on health issues. CCLS has offices in Fresno, Merced, and Visalia, and satellite offices in Mendota and Los Banos. With nearly one hundred (100) employees, CCLS's work includes direct services that meet our clients' immediate needs, education, and advocacy.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Health Consumer Center Staff Attorney will provide advice, counsel, and representation to clients dealing with a variety of issues related to health systems and agencies.
Requirements
DUTIES
Work with CCLS advocates to ensure delivery of high-quality legal representation to clients consistent with CCLS program priorities;
Develop and maintain relationships with client groups and community-based service providers, and work with them to identify community lawyering opportunities;
Identify and analyze systemic issues through individual and impact casework;
Participate in planning and strategy meetings with project partners and statewide networks of Legal Aid advocates;
Participate in weekly CCLS case review meetings, keep abreast of changes in the law, including continuing legal education, and adhere to CCLS policies and procedures;
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Active member in good standing of the State Bar of California;
Experience working with low-income clients, collaborating effectively with diverse groups of individuals and organizations, and connecting and strategizing with local community leaders;
Ability to communicate effectively with people with communication barriers including those who are stressed or confused, those who suffer from physical or mental disabilities or those for whom English is a second language;
Previous Legal Aid or other non-profit legal services experience desirable;

JOB DESCRIPTION
CCLS seeks a full-time, experienced Staff Attorney to be a part of its dynamic Housing Team. Our Housing Team oversees and implements the Shriver Right to Counsel and Homelessness Prevention Projects, which act to prevent homelessness. The Staff Attorney will carry a caseload of eviction defense (unlawful detainer) and affirmative litigation cases and provide general legal support to clients across the Central Valley. In addition to carrying their own caseload, the Staff Attorney will participate in community outreach events and legal clinics and workshops in partnership with community-based organizations. They will also work with volunteer law attorneys from private law firms who are providing pro bono representation to clients facing eviction and uninhabitable conditions. Through their work, the Staff Attorney will ensure safe and affordable housing and prevent individuals and families from being evicted into homelessness.
