1879

Livingstone College was founded in 1879 under the name Zion Wesley Institute.

After fundraising by Doctor Joseph C. Price and Bishop J. W. Hood, the school was closed in Concord and re-opened in 1882 a few miles north in Salisbury.

1887

In 1887, at the advice of Price and by an 1887 Act of the North Carolina Legislature, the name Zion Wesley College was changed to Livingstone College in honor of David Livingstone, British Christian missionary, philanthropist, and African explorer.

The institute changed its name to Livingstone College in 1887 to honor African missionary David Livingstone.

Doctor Price served the college until his death in 1893, refusing positions of great prestige and attractive salaries to devote his life and energies to the college.
