This position is located in the Technical Services Bureau (TSB), Evidence Control Division (ECD), Equipment and Supplies Branch. It is the mission of the Metropolitan Police Department to safeguard the District of Columbia and protect its residents and visitors by providing the highest quality of police service with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to innovation that integrates people, technology and progressive business systems.
This Materials Handler position is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency fee through direct payroll deductions.
The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
* Receives, stores, inspects, identifies, safeguards, maintains, issues, and delivers supplies on behalf of the department.
* Ensures that perishables are properly stored from time of receipt to time of issuance.
* Ensures that technical items which require special protection against heat, cold, moisture, light, dryness, are identified and that correct measures are taken to prevent losses.
* Ensures that stock is classified correctly and kept in a neat, clean, and orderly shelf arrangement. Ensures that warehoused items coming into stock are placed to ensure that the oldest supplies are issued first to prevent deterioration.
* Verifies quantities received against packing lists, delivery receipts, and purchases orders.
* Confirms quantities, obtains signatures on appropriate documents and makes distribution and assures that information is entered on required register.
* Makes deliveries and pick-ups of property and/or supplies to individual department elements as directed.
* Operates equipment and motor vehicles with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) of more than 10,000 pounds and up to 26,000 pounds.
* Operates a variety of manual hand trucks, hydraulic hand trucks, and electric forklifts with a lifting capacity of 5,000 pounds, for the purpose of loading, unloading and storing supplies.
* Loads property and/or supplies on vehicles and ensures that load is equally distributed and properly tied down to keep from falling or shifting to prevent damage.
* Ensures that proper documents are validated for all property and supplies delivered or picked up.
* Assists in inventorying process as needed.
* Manually moves equipment, supplies or department property as required.
* Acts in a professional manner at all times and have good verbal and written communication skills.
* Works with minimum supervision, and remains on task.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
* Ability to safely operate a 24' box truck.
* Ability to operate a forklift.
* Skilled in stacking, moving and arranging items on pallets in consideration of height, weight, and special handling requirements.
* Knowledge of warehousing methods, procedures, and material handling techniques.
* Knowledge of warehouse functions such as material receiving, storage, issuing and preservation
* Ability to complete documents and to write-out stock descriptions, to accurately list quantity, the unit of issuance, and labeling requirements for incoming and outgoing stock.
* Must demonstrate competent use of PC and various basic programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the Internet). Training in proprietary programs will be required.
Licensures, Certifications and other requirements
Incumbent must possess a valid US driver's license. Class A or B CDL permit is a plus.
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. Work Environment
Work is done inside or outside in area that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapers, brises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. When working with hazardous materials they may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes. Work may require wearing protective clothing such as hardhats, steel toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks and rubber aprons.

Summary:
The Art Handler II assists with delivery/receiving and installation/de-installation of artworks and preparation and maintenance of exhibition spaces, while also taking on responsibilities of specialized tasks and projects with a greater level of experience in museum and gallery installation, fabrication, framing, conservation, visual displays, graphics, and lighting.
Responsibilities may also include: the construction of exhibition furniture and crates; packing and fitting crates, and assistance with inventory control and maintenance of tools and equipment; as well as woodshop maintenance and the planning and fabrication of pedestals, displays, and museum furniture; framing, mounting, and mat cutting for exhibition and conservation purposes; A/V and technical installation; designing and installing graphic and didactic display elements; lighting and lighting inventory.
The Art Handler II works during the 3 - 5 week installation and de-installation period between the AU Museum's various exhibition cycles, and assists the Museum Preparator with specialized roles, tasks and additional intermittent projects. Art Hander II works under the supervision of the AU Museum's Preparator and works closely with, and provides support and assistance, to the Registrar.
Essential Functions:
* Oversee Art Handler 1 preparation and organization of tools and equipment required for installation and de-installation, and provide additional support in woodshop.
* Perform regular maintenance and upkeep of museum tools and hardware, as well as the upkeep and cleaning of museum objects, pedestals and vitrines, and storage and collections spaces.
* Assist Registrar with coordinating incoming and outgoing art and equipment shipments.
* Prepare gallery spaces for exhibition, including: wall repair and painting.
* Facilitate the construction and preparation of art installations, exhibition furniture, crates and packaging, from design to product.
* Handle, move, place and prepare art objects.
* Coordinate with the Museum Preparator the installation and layout requests of artists and curators who are on-site for installation/de-installation.
* Work with Museum Preparator to ensure the proper installation of A/V equipment, including speakers, monitors, and projectors.
* Assist with lighting and lighting design of gallery spaces.
* Install labels, signage and other didactic materials.
* Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
