1838

In 1838, Boston, Massachusetts established the first American police force and cities like New York, New York and Chicago, Illinois soon followed suit.

1840

The Census Act of 1840 provided for the collection of statistics pertaining to "the pursuits, industry, education, and resources of the country." As a result, the 1840 census was the first in which governments were asked about the numbers and kinds of schools and pupils.

1850

In 1850, collection expanded and included a separate "social statistics" schedule.

1853

Constituents would rest their lives and possessions on the kindness and competency of neighbors until 1853—when the first company of full-time, professional firefighters was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1864

Provincial and village governments were dominated by the landlords who had an ex officio right to chairmanship of local administration, especially of the zemstvo, set up in 1864 to govern the provinces under strict control of the imperial governors.

1902

The 1902 Census of Governments collected data on federal, state, and local government revenues and expenditures, assessed valuations, tax levies, and debt.

1919

German local government (omitting the Nazi era) attempted to unite the tradition of free and enterprising civic life with the full popular enfranchisement that came first only in 1919.

1934

Since its establishment in 1934, the Local Government Division has helped to foster a collaborative and effective relationship between local governments and the B.C. government.
