    This classification requires on-the-job training and performance of diverse assignments related to Machinist Lathe (RP4543) or Machinist Milling (RP4545) activities for the purpose of acquiring training and experience to satisfactorily perform the distinguishing requirements of the classification. Employees will perform the functions of the above referenced classifications and must demonstrate successful completion of assignments with a level of oversight and instruction, where appropriate. Sets-up and operates machine tools equipped with numerically controlled multiple axis continuous paths, where it is necessary to have a complete knowledge of computer numerical control (CNC) including process controls and pull down menu systems, manual mode controls and selections, control intervention and over-rides; understands the interface of multiple machine functions; performs contact measurements to self-verify conformance of product, tools and equipment; machines parts to exacting and coordinated tolerances, where it is necessary to exercise ingenuity and a thorough knowledge of machine shop theory, of machine capability and capacity, and the machinability of the materials used; locates, drills and bores precision holes; performs tool try and machining operations to specified tolerances required during the initial usage of completely new programs, fixtures, cutters and associated equipment; enters program data into computer furnished by programming for complex programs, or by using manual data input (MDI) for less complex projects. Performs rework of the level of difficulty of the operations described above. Sets up completely and operates various types of machine tools such as conventional horizontal, vertical, universal milling machines and multiple head, continuous path, numerically controlled milling machines; engine, turret and numerically controlled lathes, jig borers; horizontal boring mills; single and multiple spindle drill presses, plain and universal radial drill presses to machine parts to close tolerances, improvising and adapting tooling as required, where setup procedures, cutters, control setting, setup charts, program manuscripts and/or where machining methods and sequences are determined by interpreting operation sheets, blueprints, and other authorized information and where tooling is inadequate and it is required to adapt available tooling and/or improvise shop aids as required. Exercises a knowledge of machine capability and capacity and the machinability of the material to be machined in order to minimize the amount of machining and the number of set ups as required. Performs rework of the level of difficulty of the operations described above PERFORMS SUCH RELATED DUTIES AS: Makes complete layout on parts as a guide in machining operations. Establishes operating parameters and sequences, sets up, encodes, adjusts, and operates computerized numerically controlled machine tools to perform a variety of machining operations in manual or automatic modes. Diagnoses machine fault indications and takes corrective action. Performs periodic visual examination of equipment for preventative maintenance. Lays out reference lines on parts and/or material as a guide in machining operations. Operates numerically controlled machines manually as required. Sets and adjusts speeds, feeds, and depth or cut; selects, mounts, and aligns tooling, attachments, and material in proper relationship. Set up and operates manually operator duplicating machines where skilled hand feeding is required to machine parts to close tolerances. Checks own setup, tooling, and work for conformance to specifications using surface plate and/or precision measuring instruments. Grinds own tool bits and drills as required. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits. The base range for this position in California is $27.51 - 44.85.
