The team on Kwajalein consists of a small cadre of experienced professionals that work as one cohesive team to accomplish all work at the site\. Candidates should also be willing to perform other job\-related duties as assigned, such as assisting in the arranging for services of outside vendors; understanding the required supplies and repair parts needed to maintain systems; working with logistics personnel to orders parts as needed, maintaining records of scheduled maintenance procedures, and working on other tasks as identified by the manager and/or team leads at site\. This scope is not just limited to commercial/industrial electrical, but shall include HVAC, electronics, plumbing, and repair of other facility systems as needed\. Responding to emergency maintenance requests 24/7 and conducting infrequent training and/or mentoring of personnel should be expected\.
Applicants should be aware that there is limited medical care on the island\. Applicant must be capable of working within a small group of highly motivated and trained professionals who provide facilities, radar, mechanical, electrical, IT and electronics support 24/7\. **Your role and responsibilities**
This position is for a Virtualization Engineer supporting the Army Edge Computing Capability (AECC) project that ALTESS is fielding for the U.S. Army. AECC is a hyperconverged, multitenant private cloud hosting environment for Army enterprise and tactical applications. The solution leverages VMware products (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundation, ARIA Automation) to implement a Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) across multiple global sites. ALTESS operates as a managed service provider (MSP) under Program Executive Office Enterprise (PEO Enterprise), delivering value-added common and managed services for hosted Army applications.
Responsibilities:
* Develop, deploy, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for VMware suite deployment and sustainment within AECC.
* Utilize IaC for provisioning customer enclaves as applications are hosted on AECC.
* Administer VMware products daily, including patching and upgrading all components.
* Monitor virtualization resource utilization and alert AECC leadership when additional capacity is needed.
* Harden VMware products using commercial best practices and government cybersecurity controls.
* Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis for hosting platform issues.
* Create and maintain documentation, including system diagrams, network topology, configurations, and SOPs.
* Provide on-call support for after-hours production incident triage and resolution.
* Recommend improvements for security, scalability, manageability, and performance across network, storage, and compute services.
**Required technical and professional expertise**
* Extensive experience with the VMware suite (ESXi, vSAN, NSX, vCloud Foundation, ARIA Automation), including deployment, administration, and optimization.
* Advanced automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) expertise for streamlining virtualization operations.
* Strong troubleshooting skills across the full technology stack-network, storage, server, and applications-paired with excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
* Must live within 50 miles of Radford, VA as this job requires in person work at least 3 days per week
* Must hold and maintain an Active DoD Secret clearance
**Preferred technical and professional experience**
* Working knowledge of DoD STIGs and the Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM) process.
* Hands-on experience with container platforms and orchestration, including Kubernetes networking (CNI), storage (CSI), Helm chart management, and container image maintenance.
* Experience with GitOps principles and tools (e.g., Argo CD, Flux) for automated deployments and configuration management.
