Logan County Sheriff's Office company history timeline

1855

The Lincoln Police Department had its humble beginning in 1855.

In 1855 when Lincoln was incorporated as a town, the board of village officers created the position of “Constable”. LeRoy Brown was appointed as the first Constable for the town of Lincoln.

1865

In 1865 the position of “City Marshall” was created when the town of Lincoln and Postville combined to form the city of “Lincoln”. The newly formed City Council of Lincoln appointed Charles C. Brackett as the first City Marshall.

1870

On April 21, 1870 the City Council passed an ordinance creating a Police Force.

He was dismissed on September 5, 1870 for failure to make a sufficient number of ordinance arrests.

1882

Devil Anse Hatfield and his family had always been a political force even before the killing of his brother, Ellison, on that fateful Election Day at Blackberry Creek, Kentucky in 1882.

1903

The Logan County Sheriff's Office has been a long-standing agency of service and tradition since 1903.

1908

The Chafin name had been prominent in Logan County long before Don Chafin became the youngest person ever to serve as Logan County Assessor in 1908 at the age of twenty-one.

1920

In 1920 Chafin was elected again as sheriff and the Blair Mountain Battle followed.

1921

By 1921, Chafin told a senate investigating committee that his net worth was about $350,000.

1923

Chafin had purchased the Guyan and Valley Drug Stores in 1923 and The Logan Banner at the time described the Guyan store as “the largest single drug company in the state.”

1925

When that didn’t’ happen, Hatfield decided to testify against Chafin in Federal Court and Chafin was tried and in 1925 was sentenced to an Atlanta prison for two years.

1929

Described by The Logan Banner as “an object of concern to tourists,” The Blue Goose saloon mysteriously burned in January of 1929.

1931

Judge Jackson decided he had to take action and in January of 1931 requested a meeting with Governor William G. Conley and Attorney General Howard B. Lee at the governor’s office.

1972

2008

In February 2008 the City Ordinance changed and the Chief of Police may appoint the newly titled position “Deputy Chief” with the approval of City Council.
