Essential Job Duties:
Provide compassionate care to all animals at Lollypop Farm
Provide enrichment and ensure the well-being of animals through walking, feeding, playing and cleaning
Monitor animal behaviors, including eating, drinking, and elimination patterns, to identify potential problems and notify the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic staff as needed
Handle dogs of various temperaments and make recommendations for behavior modification
Provide daily animal movement throughout the shelter

Requirements

Essential Job Duties:
Medical Leadership and Team Development:
Develop, implement, and monitor shelter medicine programs and protocols that achieve and maintain a high standard of patient. Stay up to date on emerging trends and best practices in shelter medicine.
Provide direct management and support to staff Veterinarians, Veterinary Interns/Externs, volunteer Veterinarians, and the Clinic Operations Manager, including guidance on workflow, communication, and conflict resolution. Ensure expectations are clear, concerns are addressed promptly, and a collaborative, respectful working environment is maintained.
Collaborate with the Clinic Operations Manager to ensure adequate clinic staffing, training, performance, and compliance.
Collaborate with the COO and operations teams to expand access to veterinary care programs for the community.
Adhere to DEA requirements, state regulations and organization policies for controlled drugs. Responsibly stewards drug and supply inventory.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, professional development, accountability, and teamwork.
Build strong professional relationships with lead shelter veterinarians and shelter leadership teams in peer organizations, and veterinarians in the broader community. Surgical and Clinical Duties:
Provide timely, practical, high-quality veterinary care and surgical services for shelter animals and pets in the community in accordance with Lollypop Farm protocols, shelter medicine best practices, and Fear Free standards.
Monitor the health and welfare of the shelter population, identifying potential disease outbreaks, and implementing appropriate control measures.

The Animal Recovery Center recovers and rehabilitates animals admitted through NYPD and ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs. This facility is dedicated to recovering and rehabilitating dogs and cats who have suffered physical and emotional trauma and delivers medical and behavioral interventions to prepare them for adoption or return to the owner when appropriate.
AICAs support the behavioral and medical recovery and rehabilitation of animals in the ARC by providing medical treatments and behavioral enrichment and interventions, including during all animal care activities. AICAs interact with animals during their recovery to detect potential problems or changes in their medical or behavioral progress and communicate those effectively to clinical professionals, administer medications, provide daily care, engage in behavioral enrichment activities, and document/maintain records of all activities. One of the most critical functions of this role is serving as a member of a team of medical, behavior and sheltering personnel, all dedicated to working together to provide holistic care for all our animals.

Behavior 40%:
Engage in behavioral and enrichment activities, following enrichment program protocols. Recommend animal-specific changes to regimen, including frequency, duration, or type.
Assist in behavioral health evaluations, assessments, trainings, and other animal interventions.
Exercise and socialize animals and manage playgroups, under the direction and guidance of the ARC and CARE Behavior team. Abide by existing dog-walking programs and observe and report reactions with environmental events or human/animal interactions, and/or problems/changes in urination or defecation. Encourage healthy behaviors and interactions throughout, and reward animals appropriately.
Feed animals, provide clean water, and ensure a clean environment while interacting with animals to encourage and promote healthy behaviors, and detecting, logging, and reporting to the medical and behavior teams any irregularities or changes in animal nutrition, hydration, or behaviors (including responses to your interactions). Observing animals during these interactions is vital to the recognizing medical and behavioral changes/abnormalities early, maximizing the efficacy of potential treatments.
Monitor the comfort of shelter animals, looking for any signs of distress, anxiety, or physical ailments, and ensure that their physical environment is not resulting in discomfort (e.g., appropriate bedding (clean and fold laundry), space, adverse neighboring animals, including by maintaining the cleanliness of both animal enclosures and other workspaces that facilitate the arrival of new animals.
Always provide safe and smooth fear free handling of animals.

What You'll Do
You'll closely partner with the Director, Animal Welfare and other managers to position the ASPCA Adoption Center as a learning hub that encourages public involvement as ambassadors for the ASPCA's mission through volunteerism, foster and adoption. You'll be part of a high-performing team dedicated to the care of +/-2,000 at-risk pets per year, working collaboratively and effectively with internal and external stakeholders to further the ASPCA's ultimate goal: ensuring animals live fulfilling lives. You'll work with your team to minimize length of stay (LOS) using measurable outcomes, while ensuring all animals in care receive timely assessment, services and interventions throughout their stay.
To succeed in this role, the Sr. Manager will be a strong manager, teacher, supervisor and coach. The Sr. Manager will be dedicated to motivating, developing and leading a large team of Integrated Care Assistants in demanding and physical work. The Sr. Manager will champion canine and feline populations equally and enthusiastically and be fluent in all aspects of their well-being, including housing, enrichment, animal body language and recognizing and mitigating indicators of stress and illness. The Licensed Veterinary Technician at the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center (ARC) is responsible for a broad range of medical and administrative tasks in ARC that serves animals admitted through the NYPD Partnership program. The LVT delivers compassionate nursing care and has a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology, shelter medicine, behavior, and proficient mathematical skills.
One of the most critical functions of this role is serving as a member of a team of medical, behavior and sheltering operations personnel, all dedicated to working together to provide holistic care for victims of cruelty and neglect.
The schedule is Sundays-Wednesdays from 9a-7p.

Once these kittens are healthy and happy 8-week-olds, the Nursery helps them get ready for adoption through the ASPCA Adoption Center and partner shelters.
You will lead a team of Neonate Specialists and Care Coordinators to deliver excellent patient care for over 800+ at-risk cats and kittens each year. This team supports the care and movement of kittens through the Nursery on their way to and from foster homes through direct care, veterinary support and administrative work. You will partner with the Director, Medical Operations, under the guidance of veterinarians and licensed veterinarian technicians, to assist in the delivery of individual animal and population level care following low-stress handling principles and shelter medicine practices. To succeed in this role, the Manager will be an excellent supervisor and coach who enjoys working with both people and animals.
*The schedule for this role is Sunday-Thursday 10-6pm (the ability to adjust the schedule to meet the team's needs is crucial for this role).
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
People Management and Training (40%)
With the Director, nurture a culture of learning at the Nursery, including ensuring a respectful and welcoming environment, active participation in career development, goal setting and monitoring, setting clear expectations, and regular practice of feedback and after-actions
Be “on the floor” to answer questions, make timely operational and staffing adjustments, provide and receive feedback, lend a hand, and ensure deep understanding of and compliance with the Nursery's operations
Maintain adequate staffing levels at all times; assign and/or re-assign appropriate responsibilities, as well as direct workflow, in order to maximize productivity and maintain coverage in the event of planned absences, call outs, injuries, increased volume, etc. so as to ensure staff and animals safety
Provide training, supervision, modeling, coaching and ongoing guidance for direct reports
Instill the guiding principle that everyone can-and should-actively support the animals' behavioral and mental health in everything they do
Ensure that all team members have received training and mastered the skills to handle in a low-stress manner, and that they implement these handling techniques consistently in all their interactions with animals
Provide regular, timely and direct feedback via one-on-one check-in's and quarterly feedback sessions with direct reports
Work with the Director, Medical Operations to ensure written materials (protocols, information sheets, data sheets, etc.) are updated as needed and oversee their use by staff and volunteers
Serve as a champion in times of change management and work with Director to identify ways to improve policies and practices

Nursing Care and Veterinary Support (30%)
Using fear free techniques, handle and restrain animals for medical procedures applying the least-restraint and lowest-stress techniques possible
Ensure accurate and timely data entry to animals' medical records, including transfer of information from other ASPCA departments' software systems and diagnostic test results from outside laboratories
Prepare discharges and medications for kittens going to foster, create Foster Medical Discharges under the direction of veterinarians or licensed veterinary technicians
Maintain an efficient flow of animals through the shelter
Transport animals (using low-stress techniques) and their medical records within ASPCA departments for necessary care, including but not limited to transfers to the ASPCA Animal Hospital and/or Community Medicine
Understand multiple modalities of electronic or written medical records, or invoices, to be able to articulate animal's medical needs or concerns
Competently and compassionately explain information veterinarians have documented about an animal's condition to other Nursery staff members, volunteers, and foster caregivers with easily understood language
Be an active participant of the Nursery Team on daily shelter rounds, weekly foster rounds, and in staff meetings and trainings
Treat animals, colleagues and volunteers with care and respect
Learn and follow Nursery philosophy, procedures and protocols
Animal Care and Welfare (30%)
Coach and support direct care staff to best meet the medical needs of the animals in our care, including medication administration, medical treatment and monitoring
Feed and medicate patients following veterinarian instructions and standard operating procedures
Closely observe animals for signs of illness, injury, and/or poor welfare. Document and communicate this information on monitoring sheets, in patient medical records, and/or directly to colleagues
Ensure all personnel are following departmental PPE and cleaning protocols for kennels, equipment and facility overall
Work in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies and requirements
Ensure the adequate stock supplies are maintained and that all equipment is functioning well and is serviced properly; coordinate inventory, place orders through Procurement, schedule routine maintenance of equipment, and facilitate service and/or replacement of malfunctioning equipment
Advise Supervisor of any conditions that are unsafe including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules
Qualifications:
Knowledge of basic animal care, handling, and disease recognition; familiarity with veterinary hospital protocols and procedures
Able to understand and communicate using veterinary medical terminology
Excellent low-stress animal handling and restraint skills

Compensation and Benefits:
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The target hiring range for this role is $65,000 - $70,000 annually.
