Loma Linda University company history timeline

1905

On August 26, 1905, Loma Linda Sanitarium was incorporated; six weeks later, on October 13, the first two patients were admitted.

Loma Linda University (LLU) is a health sciences university that was established in 1905.

Loma Linda University had its beginning in 1905 when Seventh-day Adventists John Burden and Ellen G. White worked together to purchase the property and develop what became known as the Loma Linda Sanitarium.

In 1905, the American Medical Association formed a national Council on Medical Education.

1906

In 1906, Ellen White recalled:

In 1906, The Loma Linda College of Evangelists was established.

1910

At the General Conference Committee Council held at Takoma Park, April 5–15, 1910.

1913

On September 29, 1913, the College of Medical Evangelists opened the First Street Dispensary in the heart of Los Angeles.

1914

In 1914, The College of Medical Evangelists graduated its first class of six members.

1915

The December 16, 1915, Review and Herald reported on the General Conference Committee's Biennial Council which met in November at Loma Linda:

Following graduation the next year, 1915, the 18 graduates comprised a small but loyal cadre of alumni.

1921

”By 1921, the group of alumni had grown to 102.

1922

On November 16, 1922, Doctor Colwell reported that the Council on Medical Education had granted an 'A' rating to the College of Medical Evangelists.

1923

In that spirit, on May 30, 1923, Harold Lewis ’20, was elected the first president of the now formal Alumni Association.

1924

He welcomed the new class of 1924 to the Alumni Association and stated that the reputation of the College of Medical Evangelists depended on the work and influence of its graduates.

1953

The School of Dentistry at LLU was opened in 1953 with the goal of teaching a modern dental curriculum, inspiring the next generation of dentists, and setting standards for technical excellence in dental care and education.

1959

The school added a dental hygiene curriculum in 1959.

1961

Violet Bates was named the department chair, and its first dental hygienists graduated in 1961.

In 1961 college leaders voted to convert the institution to a university and renamed the institution after the city.

1966

Dean Smith was integral in establishing a dental clinic in 1966 that supported the local Navajo communities.

1967

On July 9, 1967, the university opened the Loma Linda University Medical Center with more than 125 patients from the old community hospital.

1969

Those students earned an associate’s degree, and the first of them graduated in 1969.

1970

Loma Linda became an incorporated city in 1970, and today is a thriving community with a population of around 22,000.

1984

In October 1984, at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Baby Fae became the first human to receive a heart of a baboon.

1994

In 1994, LLU named Doctor Charles Goodacre dean, and he would serve in the role for nearly 20 years.

2000

In 2000, Prince Hall was expanded once again, this time by more than 15,000 square feet, and both the pediatric and special care clinics were relocated in order to take advantage of the additional space.

2005

Loma Linda University and Loma Linda University Medical Center, as it is known today, proudly celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2005.

2009

Loma Linda University opened its new 150,000-square-foot (14,000 m) Centennial Complex on October 28, 2009.

2010

In 2010, the school opened the LLU Center for Dentistry and Orthodontics about 3 miles from the main campus in San Bernardino.

The complex was expected to bump up the university's growth by 25 percent from its current enrollment of 4,000 students to 5,000 students by 2010.

2012

In 2012, the school opened the Hugh Love Center for Research and Education in Technology.

2018

Robert Handysides, DDS, is the current LLU School of Dentistry Dean and accepted the position in 2018.
