Long Beach City College company history timeline
Founded in 1927, Long Beach City College was initially housed at Wilson Classical High School in southeast Long Beach.
Since capturing its first state title in 1928, the Long Beach City College athletic program continues to make a name for itself both locally and nationally.
Also it was Bert C. Smith who captured the school’s first state title in 1928-29 as head coach of the men’s basketball team.
It wasn’t until the early 1930’s that women’s intramural and intercollegiate teams began to form in field hockey, basketball, speedball, baseball, swimming, golf, tennis, and rowing.
Founded as Long Beach Junior College, the college started at Woodrow Wilson High School until the 1933 earthquake which destroyed the building.
Later, in 1935, the college was relocated to its present Liberal Arts Campus, at Clark Avenue and Carson Street in Long Beach.
It wasn’t until 1949 that the former Hamilton Junior High School became LBCC’s Business and Technology Division.
1987 saw the college acquire neighboring Veterans Memorial Stadium from the City of Long Beach.
Long Beach City College is committed to making its electronic and information technologies accessible to individuals with disabilities by meeting or exceeding the requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 United StatesC. 794d), as amended in 1998.
In recent years, the college has upgraded the stadium playing surface, its swimming pool facility, as well as established wireless internet and e-mail services in 2005.
