Our story begins in 1945, when Henry “Tots” Long launched Long’s Fence Co. at the corner of 18th St NE and Rhode Island in Washington, D.C. — not far from the United States National Arboretum.
In 1945, Henry Long left his job at the Washington DC Department of Public Works and established a small fence company at the corner of 18th and Rhode Island Avenue in Washington DC.
In 1961, he bought the family business from his father and transformed the small but successful venture into a thriving regional operation.
The purchase of the company in 1961 by Henry’s son Bob ushered in a tradition of being family-owned and operated.
In 1994, the home products division was renamed Long Fence and Home®. Within two years, Long Fence and Home had shown enough promise to branch off into a separate company.
In 2000, Qual Line Fence earns a Dane County Small Business Award for their business success and community contributions, and just a few years later they receive Madison’s Best in Business Award.
In 2007 Al is named president and CEO. At the same time, long-time employee Mark Schmitt assumes the vice presidency as Harriet transitions toward mostly management duties and community relations.
The company moved their Crofton Office in to a larger modern facility in Odenton, MD, in 2010.
After experiencing strong success in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and the Northern Virginia markets, in 2018 the company expanded further into New England.
