Perched on a ridge high above the Allegheny River, Longue Vue has been a Pittsburgh treasure since 1920, when a group of prominent industrialists created a retreat where friends and family could join for recreation and celebration.
In 1920, Pittsburgh businessman Edward W. Mudge spoke with a group of his peers about wanting to establish a golf course of their own.
Robert White, whom the Club still honors through a yearly golf event, was commissioned to build the golf course by Longue Vue's Board of Governors in April 1922.
Not surprisingly, Longue Vue became known as "The Millionaires Club." In addition to golf, the Longue Vue stables were erected in 1922, and equestrians trotted along six miles of bridle paths.
The first official round of golf was played at Longue Vue in May of 1923.
She was given this honor less than one year after winning the 1923 United States Women's Amateur Championships.
Cummins was the first woman to ever make it onto the cover of TIME Magazine on August 25, 1924.
In 1925, the clubhouse building, designed by renowned architect Benno Janssen and built meticulously with hand laid sandstone from a nearby quarry, became fully operational.
Prolific golf architect Albert Warren Tillinghast renovated the course in 1935, making several recommendations to improve on the original layout.
