Lorain County Community College company history timeline

1963

The college was founded on July 15, 1963.

As an institution that was chartered in 1963 after an initiative led by the League of Women Voters, LCCC became the first community college in Ohio to establish a permanent campus.

1964

In 1964, the citizens of Lorain County supported a 1.25 mil levy to provide funding for their college.

In 1964, the college absorbed the Lorain School of Technology and offered classes for the first time.

1966

LCCC’s main campus on North Abbe Road in Elyria, Ohio, opened as a permanent facility in 1966 with three buildings – Engineering Technologies, Mechanical Services, and Physical and Social Sciences.

1971

In 1971, LCCC received full accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the highest-ranking accrediting association of higher education institutions.

1998

In 1998 the University Center opened and now 14 Ohio colleges and universities offer more than 50 bachelor’s and master’s degrees on the LCCC campus through the University Partnership program.

1999

LCCC’s enrollment has continued to grow rapidly since the fall of 1999.

2012

The Innovative Learning Opportunities for Tomorrow (iLOFT) building, opened in 2012, provides the College with its first prototype of future learning spaces for the LCCC campus.

2013

LCCC is now able to prepare highly qualified graduates for careers in the hospitality and tourism industry with the 2013 opening of its Culinary and Digital Arts facility.

2014

In April 2014 LCCC launched the MyUniversity plan.

The Laboratory Sciences building, opened in spring of 2014, is a full service science laboratory space with 50,000 square feet that includes 15 state-of-the-art labs for microbiology, biology, biotechnology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, geology, physics, and anatomy and physiology.

2015

LCCC also scored highest among all Ohio community colleges in earnings for graduates in a 2015 value-added report by the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings.

2016

Its fifth president, Marcia Ballinger, was inaugurated on July 1, 2016.

In 2016 the College ranked second in Ohio and 41st nationally for highest paid community college graduates, according to PayScale Human Capital.

2018

In 2018, the college was recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) as the 2018 Recipient of the AACC Award of Excellence in Student Success.

2020

Along with that growth – all on a campus that was initially designed to handle 6,600 students – President Obama challenged community colleges to educate an additional 5 million students with degrees, certificates or credentials by 2020.
