Los Angeles Country Club company history timeline

1899

The club moved to Pico and Western in 1899, and took their clubhouse, opening the first 18-hole golf course in Southern California.

When they moved in 1899, the Pico Heights-Convent course was taken over by the Westmoorland Golf Club, known as LACC’s junior golfers.

William Watson, from Fife, Scotland – Legendary golf course designer and professional who began working winters in Pasadena-Los Angeles in 1899 and designed and built the best golf courses in California for thirty years.

1900

Charles Orr, the first Southern California Amateur Golf Champion in 1900, was given the club’s first honorary membership for his contribution to the “laying out,” of the Beverly golf course and organizing of the club house.

1903

British P.G.A. rejects “Bounding Billy,” the beginning of the end. (1903)

1908

#1 son was John Holliday Macbeth born in 1908.

1919

After a year of hard work by the Los Angeles Country Club’s greenkeeper Charlie Cavanaugh and his crew, eighteen grass greens were constructed in time for the 20th Southern California Amateur Golf Championship held in March 1919.

He returned to Los Angeles in August 1919, and was soon elected chairman of the Green committee creating the new Wilshire Country Club golf course in Hancock Park, which became his non-working life’s passion.

1920

By 1920 the club had acquired additional land south of Wilshire Boulevard and Fowler remodeled the front nine and added nine new holes, seven of them on the new land and two north of Wilshire, to make the new South course.

1934

In 1934 Norman married Lucille Chandler, ex-wife of Wilshire CC founder Raymond Stephens.

1948

Hogan won it there in 1948.

1973

Behind the scenes at Golf Digest, Nick Seitz had taken over as the magazine’s editor, and the January 1973 issue was his first at the helm.

1997

And runs off with the butcher.” He once quoted his wife as saying: “If Jim ever gets to heaven and Ben Hogan isn’t there, he ain’t staying.” (Hogan got there first in 1997, Murray a year later.)
