Los Angeles Valley College company history timeline
The college was officially chartered by the Los Angeles Board of Education in June 1949, and was located on the campus of Van Nuys High School.
Founded in 1949, LA Valley College is a 105-acre urban oasis located just minutes away from Hollywood, Beverly Hills, downtown Los Angeles, and the beaches of Santa Monica, Malibu, and major motion picture and television studios.
In 1950, the college opened its evening division offering only 12 classes.
In 1951 Valley College moved to its permanent 105-acre (42 ha) site on Fulton Avenue in Valley Glen.
In 1954, members of the faculty founded the Athenaeum which began to offer community programs that brought the Los Angeles Philharmonic to the campus.
In 1969, the Los Angeles Community College District was formed and its nine colleges were separated from the Los Angeles Unified School District.
On the 25th anniversary of the college in 1974, the Valley College Historical Museum was founded.
The Los Angeles Valley College Historical Museum was founded in 1975 by Doctor James Dodson.
Adam Carolla - recruited to play football, dropped out Bobby Castillo - Former Major League Baseball Pitcher and 1981 World Series Champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
LAVC celebrated its 50th birthday in 1999 with a variety of events.
When the Metro Orange Line opened on October 29, 2005, Valley College received its own stop located at the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Fulton Avenue.
In 2006 the campus opened its first LEED-certified building, the Maintenance and Operations/Sheriff’s Station, which was the first new building in over 30 years.
The award-winning Allied Health and Sciences Center opened in 2008, and has 131 new rooms, tutorial labs, and faculty offices for the departments of Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, Anthropology, and Health Science.
In February 2014, a former student was detained in a "swatting" incident where another person called in a fake threat that the student was planning to shoot the school.
