South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) was created by Act 1369 of the 1997 Louisiana regular legislative session.
Operations of the college were launched February 1, 1998, and it offered coursework to 31 students at its New Iberia location beginning in May 1998.
ACT 151 of the 1998 First Extraordinary Session not only created LCTCS but also moved vocational education under the umbrella of LCTCS as Louisiana Technical Colleges (LTC) reflecting the integration of technical and applied academic education.
Classes were offered in Lafayette beginning in January 1999 and in Franklin during the Fall 1999 semester.
In 1999, the LCTCS Board of Supervisors established Louisiana Technical College (LTC), which was comprised of 40 campuses offering training programs to approximately 50,000 students.
Under Doctor Welch’s leadership, the college began offering classes in 1999 to little more than 100 students in the Sorrento Firehouse and a local church.
In 2005, the LCTCS Board of Supervisors, under Act 506, re-organized LTC combining all the LTC entities with the Community College in their respective service areas.
In 2010, RPCC was named the fastest growing community college of its size in the nation by Community College Week.
In 2010, the LTC, Region 4 was renamed Acadiana Technical College (ATC) and reorganized as a single college with Lafayette as the main campus and branch campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, New Iberia, Opelousas, St Martinville, and Ville Platte.
In 2012, during the regular legislative session, the legislature approved Act 760 which combined the facilities under CLTC to create Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC), a two-year technical and community college headquartered in Alexandria, La.
In 2012 RPCC was authorized to purchase property and build a dedicated campus.
The “new” comprehensive SLCC enrolled more than 7,600 students in the Fall 2012 semester.
RPCC’s 2013 graduating class of 206 students was larger than the college’s first student body.
The Technical Training facility was completed in 2016 allowing the RPCC technical campus to relocate to the Gonzales campus bringing the college together for the first time.
