Job Description Working under general supervision with approved protocols or under the order of a licensed independent provider (LIP), the Respiratory Care Practitioner II (Registered) executes assignments demonstrating a clinical competence in Respiratory Care in the selection of accurate technical factors on an individual patient basis necessary to evaluate and provide age appropriate treatment across all patient types in all locations to include cardiopulmonary dysfunction secondary to developmental defects, the aging process, physical injury or disease requiring the administration of inhaled medications, utilization of specialized ventilation equipment and performing a variety of respiratory care techniques. Adheres to all department and facility policies and procedures. Manages an assigned case load and responds to emergent patient needs. Functions as part of a larger team to support all patients under the department's care. : Performs a variety of respiratory care treatments to specific patient populations, i.e., adult, pediatric, or neonatal. Verifies all interventions are supported by protocol or LIP order. Observes and monitors physical signs and symptoms, general behavior, general physical response to respiratory care procedures. Collaborates with LIP during patient rounds the therapeutic treatment plans to determine whether initiation, modification, or discontinuation of the treatment regimen is warranted. Adheres to Joint Commission, State, Federal, organizational and departmental regulatory compliance standards. Administers therapeutic and diagnostic gases (exclusive of anesthetic agents), aerosolized medication treatments and chest physiotherapy. Administers invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and adjusts ventilation equipment to optimize patient support. Ensures correct ventilator alarms and settings. Collaborates with the healthcare team when adjusting ventilation parameters and settings, as necessary in accordance with patient's response. Evaluates the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions by reviewing chest x-rays, utilizing noninvasive monitor values and laboratory results. Monitors patient appearance and vital signs and consults with the LIP or a senior practitioner as necessary Documents accurate patient care activity in various electronic health records systems Contributes to departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives and efforts to improve workflows, patient experience and quality. Participates in student and employee training and education activities. Qualifications Associate's Degree /Legacy Approved Certificate Program. Collaborates with physician regarding therapeutic treatment plans to determine whether initiation, modification, or discontinuation of the treatment regimen is warranted. Terminates patient treatment upon notice of patient discomfort, troubled medical status, or inability to accept treatment. Participates in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures, including, airway management, manual ventilation, and cardiac compressions as needed. Administers therapeutic and diagnostic gases (exclusive of general anesthesia), bronchodilator treatments, and chest physiotherapy, aerosolized medication treatments in accordance with departmental procedures, as directed by a physician. Main Function: A Per Diem Respiratory Therapist (RT), under medical direction of an LCP, provides treatment, management, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the Pulmonary System. The Per Diem RT assesses patients who require respiratory care by interview, physical examination of the chest and review of the patient's chart and chest x-rays. The Per Diem RT provides respiratory care by administration of medicated aerosol treatments, IPPB, ultrasonic nebulization, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, humidification, and oxygen therapy. This health care professional also: maintains mechanical ventilators and makes appropriate ventilator setting changes after consultation with the physician; evaluates patients for weaning from mechanical ventilation; participates in CPR; obtains and analyzes arterial blood gas samples; participates in multidisciplinary care planning; and recommends various modes of therapy to physicians. Duties and Responsibilities: * Patient Assessment: collect health data through interviews, a physical exam of the chest, evaluation of breath sounds, and a review of the patient's medical record. * Develops appropriate treatment regimens based on patient care needs identified during the assessment within the framework of accepted criteria and discusses the care plan with the ordering physician. * Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the administration of respiratory therapy modalities to include: oxygen therapy, respiratory medications, aerosol therapy, IPPB, ultrasonic nebulization, incentive spirometry, Chest physiotherapy, mechanical ventilation, CPAP, and BiPAP. * Educate patients and families about respiratory modalities, and medications. * Active involvement with Quality Improvement initiatives, follows all appropriate policies, procedures, and protocols, follows Risk Management, Infection Control, Fire and Safety, and Corporate Compliance policies and procedures. * Maintain, clean, stock, and setup of respiratory therapy equipment. * Maintain mechanical ventilators by cleaning, set-up of the patient circuit, and performing the pre-use ventilator procedure. * Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the selection of appropriate ventilator settings and evaluate patients for weaning. * Demonstrate proper technique for arterial punctures, site preparation, patient identification, and acceptable samples. * Be proficient in the use of pH/Blood Gas analyzers including maintenance, quality control, rule violations, and documentation. * Provide supervision as needed to other members of the Respiratory Therapy department. * Maintain certification in CardioPulmonary Resuscitation. * Identify problem areas pertaining to respiratory therapy and take appropriate actions or make recommendations to correct the problem. * Demonstrates support and compliance with University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus's mission, vision, values philosophy, goals, objectives, and policies. * Performs additional functions to assist the Assistant Director, Respiratory Therapy, and other activities as assigned.
