Position Summary
Medical Sonographers operate specialized equipment that transmits high frequency, ultrasound waves in order to produce images of the areas scanned. Sonographers in this series primarily scan abdominal, pelvic, lower and upper extremities areas of the body (such as the spleen, liver, pancreas, uterus, kidneys, or thyroid, etc.), or perform OB/GYN related procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Performs general ultrasound scans on anatomical regions such as abdomen, pelvis, and small parts
* Utilizes proper settings on the ultrasound equipment and patient tables for optimal scanning
* Assembles supply kits and instruments for exams such as thoracentesis, paracentesis and assists physicians with the performance of these procedures
* Cleans and disinfects transducers according to established infection control standards and manufacturer instructions for use
* Utilizes the electronic medical record and imaging information systems for processing, storing images and documentation
* Stock supplies in the rooms and alerts manager when inventory is low
* Confers with a radiologist to ensure complete acquisition and selection of images is performed
* Communicates with other clinical departments to coordinate patient care activities
* Instructs technical students and collaborates with residents
* Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* High school graduate or equivalent.
* Current/valid registration, certification or licensure in Medical Sonography, accreditation in sonography by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS).
* Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification from the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
* Abdomen (AB) certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)

* Documents imaging procedures manually and/or electronically to insure correct charging, and patient and film file tracking

Required Qualifications:

Job Description
I. General Summary
The Perinatal Sonographer provides safe and effective ultrasound services to OB/GYN patients with specific attention to the specialized procedures unique to Perinatal medicine. Performs and interprets ultrasounds within the scope of the job. Together with the physician, develops final diagnostic impression. Properly documents all procedures according to policy.
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Collaborates with patients, significant others, physicians and other ancillary departments to become a multidisciplinary healthcare team with the goal to provide care that is continuous and well- coordinated.
Consults and communicates with other departments in professional manner. Plans delivery of care according to patient activity and staff competencies. Appropriately communicates ultrasound results to referring - physician. Demonstrates collaborative efforts between L & D, Antepartum, and postpartum units and delivers services timely. Demonstrates understanding of safety, health and morale needs of customers/co-workers by taking steps to ensure those needs are met. Maintains a clean and organized work area. Prioritizes work and adjusts priorities based on changing situations. Responds effectively in emergency situations.
2. Performs standard and specialized perinatal ultrasound procedures.
Working independently to optimize efficiency and productivity, selects and prepares equipment and supplies and performs comprehensive and complete diagnostic exams. Documents procedures for medical records. Provides and stores imaged medical records via M.O. Disks and VHS tapes. Generates detailed computerized sonogram reports. Participates accurate ultrasound guidance for diagnostic and therapeutic exams and participates in ultrasound interpretation with provider, contributing technical, professional knowledge and observation to the final diagnostic impression. Responds in an appropriate time frame when L&D, antepartum and postpartum units request services. Performs specialized perinatal ultrasound procedures including high quality anatomic surveys through the use of extensive - knowledge of fetal anatomy with recognition of normal and abnormal findings and/or pathology. Performs accurate nuchal translucency measurements in accordance with criteria set by FMF and SMFM to insure high quality first trimester screening. Follows appropriate scan protocol for ultrasound Doppler exams including middle cerebral, ductus venosus and uterine arteries unless otherwise directed by Perinatologist and in accordance with American Institute of Medicine. Performs 3D/4D scans using equipment knowledge and understanding of MPR scan planes (sagittal, coronal, transverse) to produce a diagnostic image. Actively participates in continued re-certification and audit process for NT first trimester screening program as required by FMF and SMFM.
3. Provides comprehensive care to patient requiring medical imaging services in an organized and systematic manner according to policy.
Properly identifies patient. Obtains and documents patient history and pertinent information. Appropriately educates and explains procedures to patients. Prepares patient for procedures. Assesses patient for risk factors and logs patient's genetic results and abnormal cases Communicates any changes in patient's condition to patient care area. Follows departmental protocol for procedures unless - specified differently by Perinatologist, clarifying and following doctors' orders Adhering to infection control standards and using proper sterile technique, produces quality diagnostic images for interpretation in timely fashion using appropriate technique and positioning. Performs all studies in accordance with ALARA (As Los as Reasonably achievable) principal set by AMA. Performs portable procedures as well as procedures in the OR. Acts as a patient advocate and upholds patient rights. Protects the privacy of patients and employees.
4. Uses equipment and resources appropriately.
Operates medical imaging equipment properly and safely using department standards for reporting malfunctions or problems. Selects and modifies technical factors as necessary. Follows TJC - requirements for management of hazardous materials. Maintains an appropriate level of supplies in work area as needed. Follows appropriate protocols to ensure the safety of self and others.

Position Summary
Medical Sonographers operate specialized equipment that transmits high frequency, ultrasound waves in order to produce images of the areas scanned. Principal Duties:

3. Demonstrates the ability to assist Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians with invasive procedures; including amniocentesis, fetal intrauterine transfusion, amnio-reduction, sonohysterography, and other invasive procedures as indicated.
4. Demonstrates the ability to obtain limited clinical information from the patient to determine the most appropriate procedure(s) to perform.
5. Demonstrates the ability to conduct ultrasound examinations to consistently perform accurate Perinatology Ultrasound examinations including, but not limited to Obstetrical Targeted and Detailed fetal ultrasound, biophysical profiles, nuchal translucency, localizations for amniocentesis, Doppler ultrasound, 3D/4D ultrasound, follow up growth scans and transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds with the ability to normal and abnormal fetal anatomy, placental architecture and location, uterine structure and amniotic fluid volume and fetal anatomy.
6. Demonstrates ability to differentiate fetal anatomical abnormalities, maintain the ability to identify subtle changes of color hue. Differentiates vascular abnormalities by identifying sub changes in sound (Doppler)
7. Demonstrates ability to make timely notification to the Perinatologist of all findings and immediate notification of any life threatening or significant findings.
8. Demonstrates a firm knowledge in fetal and maternal physiology and fetal anatomy relevant to obstetrics and continues to be familiar with evidenced-based clinical principles and must be a continuous learner and participate in didactic activities.
9. Demonstrates ability to conduct daily quality control testing as required to ensure consistency in quality. Conducts daily visual checks on equipment. Reports all deviations to the Perinatologist, removes defective equipment from use and assures items are repaired.
10. Demonstrates a familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding with an ability to assign appropriate codes to the ultrasound study.
11. Demonstrates the ability to generate a preliminary ultrasound report with the inclusion of ICD-10 and CPT codes for the Perinatologist to review and finalize.
12. Demonstrates a willingness to be scheduled to perform perinatal ultrasound at a variety of clinical satellite locations under Dimensions Healthcare System and to rotate among the various sites with minimal supervision.
13. Demonstrates ability to maintain knowledge of emergency procedures, location of life support equipment and supplies for emergency readiness.
14. Demonstrates ability to position and transfer patients using appropriate body mechanics and transfer devices. Assures that assistance is obtained when necessary to assure safety.
15. Demonstrates the ability to obtain patient vital signs including pulse and blood pressure.
16. Demonstrates the ability to schedule appointments, enter departmental charges, assure adequate supplies, keep workspace clean and orderly, answer telephones, take messages and other office functions as needed.

Qualifications
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Required
: Current ARDMS and/or ARRT Ultrasound certification in good standing
Preferred: RDMS certification in good standing
Other: RDMS certification or ARRT certification preferred, however, if not ARDMS or ARRT certified, it is required that certification occurs within 1 year of hire date.
Certification in Nuchal Translucency and Fetal Echocardiogram is preferable but not required
Certifications: Basic Life Support - Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)
Education/Knowledge:

Completed Course Work/Program: Graduate from Joint Review Committee approved program for Sonography
Applicable Experience (years):
Required: 1 - 3 years
