Ludwig Drums company history timeline

1909

The Ludwig Drum Company was established in 1909 by William F. & Theobald Ludwig, sons of a German immigrant to the United States.

1911

1911 – Ludwig introduces their first Timpani model.

1917

Like many other manufacturing companies in the early 20th century, they were recruited to produce goods for the war effort, and in 1917 Ludwig & Ludwig signed a deal to build rope drums.

1936

William F. Ludwig did no appreciate the lack of innovation and involvement after the merger and left Ludwig in 1936.

1938

1938 – WFL creates the 1st Speed King Bass Drum Pedal.

1947

In 1947, Ludwig produced their first post-war catalogue which featured the most famous drummer in the world – Buddy Rich – on the cover.

1951

1951 – Under Conn, Ludwig & Ludwig and Leedy are combined under the name Leedy & Ludwig.

1955

1955 – William F. Ludwig (WFL) buys the “Ludwig” name from Conn to form The Ludwig Drum Company.

In 1955, William and his son Bill Jr. were able to buy the Ludwig trademark back from Conn, and over the next few years their company and its products transitioned from the WFL brand to being called "Ludwig" again.

1964

In 1964, Ringo Starr’s decision to use a branded bass drum head while playing with The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show changed the fortunes of a Chicagoan drum manufacturer forever.

1965

Ludwig acquired the "Musser Mallet Company", a manufacturer of xylophones, marimbas and vibraphones, in 1965.

1966

In 1966 Ludwig also purchased the Musser Marimba Company which made mallets and percussive instruments such as vibes, marimbas, bells, chimes and xylophones.

In 1966, Ludwig acquired Musser Mallet Percussion and began marketing their brand as Total Percussion.

1980

In the 1980’s Ludwig was bought by Selmer Company.

1981

In 1981 Ludwig was purchased by the Selmer Company.

1984

1984 - Ludwig’s 75th anniversary of business, Ludwig Drums moves operations from Chicago to Monroe, NC.

1998

From the Classic Maple Series kit released in 1998 to the low-cost drums released in the noughties, the products are arguably as accessible and reliable as they ever have been.

2013

In 2013, the BreakBeat kit by QuestLove was introduced.

2015

2015 – Ludwig introduces Legacy Mahogany outfits to the USA Made offering
