Lueken's Village Foods-South company history timeline

1952

In 1952, Henry Lueken family moved his family to Mitchell, SD where they opened a new bakery.

1955

In July of 1955, Henry Lueken, along with two of his sons, Joe and Lloyd, attended the Schulte School of Cake Decorating in Omaha, Nebraska.

1961

The advertisement to the right appeared in Mitchell's newspaper, The Daily Republic, on March 9, 1961.

1966

Joe agreed and on July 18, 1966 Lueken’s Foods opened its doors for the first time.

1969

Joe eventually bought out his brother and became the sole owner of Lueken’s Foods in 1969.

1976

In 1976, Joe found an opportunity to build a new store on the north side of Bemidji.

1978

The store was completed in the summer of 1978 and Joe was able to realize a dream of building a store with a bakery.

1981

In 1981, Kraft held a nationwide contest to find stores who could design the best promotions featuring their products.

1984

In 1984, Glass Block Drug closed and Lueken's expanded into the additional space and remodeled.

1986

In February of 1986, Econofoods was opened in Wahpeton, ND.

1995

In 1995, the North location in Bemidji, Minnesota was remodeled and expanded.

1999

In 1999, Lueken's North and South locations as well as Econofoods in Wahpeton, North Dakota were expanded by building warehouses in the back of each location to allow for greater buying power.
