Luxottica Company History Timeline

1961
1961 Del Vecchio and two financial partners launch Luxottica in Agordo.
So in 1961, he moved to Agordo in the province of Belluno, which is home to most of the Italian eyewear industry.
1967
1967 The company begins production of its own Luxottica branded eyeglass frames.
1969
Having taken courses in advanced machine design in 1969, he began to devise automated molding and milling equipment.
1970
In 1970, the company assigned exclusive rights to distribute its eyewear in the United States to Avant Garde.
1971
1971 Luxottica ends its contract manufacturing operations to concentrate on its eyeglass manufacturing wing.
1974
1974 The company buys up Scarrone, its Italian distributor, in the first move to become a vertically integrated operation.
1981
1981 The company launches a German sales subsidiary.
In 1981 the company set up its first international subsidiary, in Germany, the first in a rapid period of international expansion.
1982
1982 The company acquires a United States distributor to begin sales operations in the United States.
1983
Established in 1983, LensCrafters was one of the first businesses to combine vision professionals, eyeglass frames, and prescription lens processing in one easily accessed mall location.
1984
1984 The company launches subsidiaries in England, France, and Canada.
1988
The financial backing of this billion-dollar conglomerate helped LensCrafters become the largest retail eyewear chain in the United States by 1988.
The first of many licensing deals with a designer was struck with Armani, in 1988.
1990
Also to finance its expansion, in 1990 Luxottica went public in the USA, being listed at the New York Stock Exchange.
1995
1995 Luxottica acquires Lensmasters, formerly part of United States Shoe Corporation, and becomes a retail optical leader.
1997
The first Chinese factory opened in 1997 showing the company s increased interest in Far East markets.
1999
1999 Luxottica acquires the sunglasses division of Bausch Lomb, including Ray Ban and other brands the company launches the managed vision care subsidiary EyeMed Vision Care.
2014
In March of 2014, it was announced that Luxottica would partner with Google on the development of Google Glass and its integration into Luxottica s eyewear.
2018
In June 2018, Luxottica has acquired Barberini SpA, a world classic in the production of avant-garde lenses.
