Luxury Limousine Service company history timeline

1886

When the first engine powered automobile was invented in 1886, it didn’t take long for people to figure out a way to incorporate it into a limousine.

1887

Three men in Fort Smith, Arkansas namely Tom Armbruster, Walter Walkford, and Charles Kaiser started Armbruster & Company in 1887 which was in the business of building and restoring horse-drawn wagons.

1900

1904

When Henry Royce met Charles Rolls in 1904, Henry was already running a successful electrical and mechanical business and had manufactured his first vehicle.

1909

Our 1909 Rolls Royce Convertible rolled off the assembly line just three years after the legendary automaker was founded.

1916

The Berline was a new kind of limousine in 1916 where the driver’s seat was enclosed within the car.

1920

Until the 1920’s, limousines weren’t that large.

By 1920, Armbruster & Company was a flourishing auto body repair depot.

1923

According to images stored in the company archives, it was in early 1923 when the first Armbruster stretch unit was completed.

1928

The first actual stretch limousine was created in Arkansas around 1928.

1930

In the 1930′s Limousines really started to take off.

1932

Hand rubbed mahogany shine brilliantly in Elegant Journey's 1932 Cadillac Limousine wedding car.

1939

For about three decades limousines lacked this technology however in 1939 the first Limousine with its air conditioner was built in the city of New York.

1940

By 1940, manufacturers such as Cadillac, Packard, and Lincoln were producing stretch limousines, which were used to transport well-heeled folks from one place to another.

1942

The United States government also commissioned a new armored limousine belonging to the 1942 Lincoln H-series in addition to retrofitting the rest of the existing cars in the presidential fleet with bulletproof glass and armor.

1948

Legend had it that President Truman didn’t like General Motors’ products because the company refused him their use during his presidential campaign (1948). When it was time for the “Sunshine Special” to be replaced, Truman decided to entrust the job to Ford’s Lincoln division.

1950

The “Sunshine Special” continued to be used by successive presidents even after Roosevelt’s death and stayed in service until 1950.

1956

Elegant Journey's own 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was a favorite of celebrities and dignitaries who enjoyed the car's flash and performance.

1974

In 1974 Armbruster-Stageway Coachbuilders partners with Cadillac to build the first six-door modern super stretch limousine on Cadillac chasses.

1987

The custom automobile was first spoken about by Trump in his 1987 autobiography The Art of the Deal.

The last factory-built limo by Cadillac dates back to 1987.

1988

And while they’re even better than the Trump Limousine Series of 1988, you won’t have to pay through your nose for it.

1993

A 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood was used by President Clinton as his presidential state car.

2009

Several new features added to the S-100-X as “Quick Fix” could be called progenitors to what was later used on the state car of President Barack Obama’s 2009 GMC TopKick heavy-duty truck, which was customized to make it appear like a 2009 Cadillac sedan.

You’ll find depictions of the presidential limos in several movies too (such as White House Down – the 2013 thriller) but the details, though similar to some extent with their real counterparts, would never be the exact versions since the Secret Service releases not many details to the public.
